Vice President JD Vance said he would not call the U.S. fight with Iran a war, saying there is no active shooting right now and that major combat operations lasted about six weeks.

“Well, I'll tell you what, a lot of people don't call it a war. I call it a military conflict because it's small potatoes for us. It's not a big thing. ... So I can understand what he's saying. It's a military conflict, but it's very intermittent. I could see somebody not calling it a war.”

Why we used this label

Trump endorses Vance's description. He says he can understand it, explains his own label by the size and intermittent pace of the fighting, and says he could see someone not calling it a war. His small potatoes remark also downplays the fighting, but the reference point is the label, so defends or excuses fits better than minimizes.

Why we used this label

The reference point is use of the 2025 map in the 2026 general election. Trump says Missouri must be able to use the primary map, which is the 2025 map. His criticism of the state court is criticism of a third party, so the closest competing label, condemns, does not fit the reference point.

Learning Resources, Inc. and six other companies said in their August 24, 2026 motion that USTR's determinations are "pretextual and preordained" and that the administration has now tried to re-create "materially the same global tariff regime under three disparate statutes."

Why we used this label

Relative to the Section 301 forced-labor tariffs, Trump defends the tariffs as beneficial and treats the route now being used as a workable substitute for the one the Court rejected. He does not say the tariffs are a lawful use of Section 301 and does not mention forced labor. We used Defended or excused because he supports the tariffs and the route to them. The closest competing label is Mixed or conditional, because he calls the route harder and more cumbersome, but he attaches no condition to his support. The host asked about the tariffs Trump had put forward over the last couple of days, and Trump did not say which tariffs he meant. The Section 301 duties took effect four days earlier and CNBC reported the remark as about the new tariffs, but his answer also covers tariffs generally. The challengers cite the remark as evidence of pretext, and the government says officials' public statements do not change USTR's documented rationale. DI does not decide that dispute.

The fixed reference point is the administration's stated or threatened use of ICE at or near polling places. Trump neither said agents would nor would not be sent to voting locations, and tied any action to doing "anything necessary" for honest elections. That express, unresolved condition fits mixed or conditional. Explicitly declines loses because he answered in general terms instead of refusing the question.

Trump states as his belief that Omar married her brother and that it is “totally illegal,” and says he imagines investigators are looking at her, while saying he has “nothing to do with it.” That asserts the accusation and speculates that officials are looking at her.
