Statement summary

On the September 18 episode of HBO’s Real Time, Bill Maher said that Ed Sheeran let Macklemore be his opening act and that Macklemore “goes out there and repeats lies about how Gaza is a genocide,” adding, “Not that they care, but that’s a lie.” Maher said Robert Kraft, who owns the stadium where the concert was to take place, “was understandably offended” and said, “You can’t play my stadium.” He also joked about a costume Macklemore wore in 2014, which the reports describe as a dark wig, beard and fake nose.

“So, Ed Sheeran let Macklemore be his opening act on his tour. And when I say, ‘act,’ he goes out there and repeats lies about how Gaza is a genocide.” … “Not that they care, but that’s a lie.” … “He was understandably offended by this and said, ‘You can’t play my stadium.’”

Why we used this label

Maher calls Macklemore’s claim that Gaza is a genocide “a lie” and says Macklemore “repeats lies” on stage, which rejects the substance of the speech. He also says Kraft was “understandably offended” by it, which describes Kraft’s reaction as understandable without stating an opinion on whether the removal was justified. The closest competing label is “Mixed or conditional”, because Maher does not address the removal itself; it loses because his only evaluation of the speech is a rejection, and the Kraft remark reports Kraft’s reaction rather than taking a position that cuts the other way.

Statement summary

Responding on Overtime to a question about Trump saying that the Kennedy Center is in “a virtual state of collapse,” Bill Maher said “I was just there,” that it “looked fantastic,” and that the claim it needs renovation is “a bunch of bullshit” and “just a cover story.” He said Trump “wanted his name on it,” that a judge ruled he could not put his name on it, and that Trump then covered the whole building with “a giant tarp” so that “we couldn’t see any name.”

“It looked fantastic. In fact, all weekend, I kept saying to people, what a bunch of bullshit this is that it needs renovation. Obviously, that’s just a cover story. This place is perfect looking, and the people were great.” … “He wanted his name on it, and the judge said he couldn’t put his name on it.” … “There was just a giant tarp over the whole building so that, you know, we couldn’t see any name.”

Why we used this label

Maher answers a question about Trump’s claim that the center is collapsing by saying it looks fantastic, calling the claim that it needs renovation “a bunch of bullshit” and “just a cover story,” and attributing the dispute to Trump’s wanting his name on the building. That rejects Trump’s stated rationale that the building is collapsing and condemns the renovation as a pretext for the naming dispute. The closest competing label is “Challenged the characterization”, because he first disputes the description of the building’s condition; it loses because he goes on to attribute a motive and to mock Trump’s response to the court’s naming ruling, which criticizes the position itself.

Statement summary

Maher named Macklemore as speaking for what he called clueless celebrities and rejected the genocide characterization, calling the war a counterattack.

“I think Macklemore spoke for all clueless celebrities when he said, “I know enough to know this is a genocide.” Actually, you don't know shit. … It's not a genocide. It's a counterattack in a war.”

On November 19, 2018, Cea Weaver posted: “Impoverish the white middle class. Homeownership is racist / failed public policy.”

“What? That’s a goal? You know you’re supposed to scare people into voting for you, right?”

Weaver described homeownership as racist and failed public policy.

“He has not disavowed her, and I could show you all her tweets that she's put out over the last few years in quotes.”

Why we used this label

The reference point is Weaver's homeownership remarks and her "impoverish the white middle class" post. Maher presents the remarks as damaging and agrees with his guest that they are ridiculous, so we labeled it Condemned, as with his July 31 monologue in this case. Challenged the characterization does not fit because he repeats the remarks to criticize them; his phrase "all homeownership is racist" is his paraphrase of her posts, not her wording.
