Bill Maher calls the Kennedy Center renovation claim “just a cover story” and says Trump “wanted his name on it”
Bill MaherComedian and host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, speaking on the show’s Overtime segment
Responding on Overtime to a question about Trump saying that the Kennedy Center is in “a virtual state of collapse,” Bill Maher said “I was just there,” that it “looked fantastic,” and that the claim it needs renovation is “a bunch of bullshit” and “just a cover story.” He said Trump “wanted his name on it,” that a judge ruled he could not put his name on it, and that Trump then covered the whole building with “a giant tarp” so that “we couldn’t see any name.”
“It looked fantastic. In fact, all weekend, I kept saying to people, what a bunch of bullshit this is that it needs renovation. Obviously, that’s just a cover story. This place is perfect looking, and the people were great.” … “He wanted his name on it, and the judge said he couldn’t put his name on it.” … “There was just a giant tarp over the whole building so that, you know, we couldn’t see any name.”

Where this statement fits
Should Donald Trump link the Kennedy Center's renovation to recognition for his administration?
On September 15, 2026, a federal judge barred the Kennedy Center board, chaired by Donald Trump, from inscribing "renovated and restored by Donald J. Trump" on its main building or renaming the grounds for him. The board then voted to close the main building, and Trump posted that renovation "cannot begin until such time as the D.C. Circuit rules on the Board's approved name" and "will not take place" if that ruling is negative and not overturned. In Charlotte on September 16 he said the administration "should certainly have recognition. Because frankly, if we don't do that, it's going to close. It'll end up being ripped down." The White House says the center will "inevitably continue to decline" without his intervention; Rep. Joyce Beatty's lawyers wrote that Trump said "if he is not recognized on the building, it will close and be ripped down." The dispute is over whether the renovation should depend on recognition for Trump's administration and what his remarks mean.

About this source
NPR’s August 19, 2026 report on the Kennedy Center board’s court filings. It reports the center’s argument that the tarp covering the signage at the complex’s front entrance is a “necessary element of the ongoing construction activities” and the argument by Rep. Joyce Beatty’s lawyers that it is there to frustrate the court’s order.

Maher read a question asking what the panel thought of Trump saying that the Kennedy Center is in “a virtual state of collapse.” The passage below is his answer, briefly interrupted by another panelist between the first and second excerpts.
After the quotation
NPR reported on June 29 that Maher had received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center on Sunday night, and that a tarp “still covers that area, blocking the removal of Trump’s name from public view”; Maher refers in this passage to “the award.” On August 19 NPR reported that the center told a court the tarp covering the signage at the front entrance is a “necessary element of the ongoing construction activities,” while lawyers for Rep. Joyce Beatty argued it is there “to frustrate the intent of the Court’s order that the Center be returned to a memorial exclusively honoring President Kennedy.” Maher’s description of a tarp over “the whole building” is his own.
How this statement is classified
The label describes this statement's response within the context above.
Why this label?
Maher answers a question about Trump’s claim that the center is collapsing by saying it looks fantastic, calling the claim that it needs renovation “a bunch of bullshit” and “just a cover story,” and attributing the dispute to Trump’s wanting his name on the building. That rejects Trump’s stated rationale that the building is collapsing and condemns the renovation as a pretext for the naming dispute. The closest competing label is “Challenged the characterization”, because he first disputes the description of the building’s condition; it loses because he goes on to attribute a motive and to mock Trump’s response to the court’s naming ruling, which criticizes the position itself.

“this is the memorial created by the United States Congress to a slain president. So, putting Trump's name on it would be like renaming the Washington Monument the Trump Washington Monument or the Trump Lincoln Memorial or the Trump Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. ... And their argument is they're not -- there is not money for it. But in the Big Beautiful Bill, they -- the Congress passed $246 million in order to restore the Kennedy Center. Jeff Merkley says Trump wants to destroy the Kennedy Center because the law bars his name on it
“Perhaps the greatest living memorial for a president is the Kennedy Center, in honor of our slain president who championed the arts. But now President Trump—without authorization from Congress—is trying to tear it down. First, he destroyed its programming, and now, he wants to destroy the building itself. All because the law says Trump can’t put his name on the building.”Read statement
