Mixed or conditional

Response to this claim

DOJ's expanded nationwide election-monitoring deployment is justified as routine enforcement of federal election law.

“We will be monitoring the monitors. We will make sure that they follow all of the laws and that they don't interfere or disrupt voting on Election Day in any way whatsoever”

Why we used this label

She accepts DOJ monitoring as routine on the condition that monitors follow the law, while criticizing the department's wider record on voting rights.

Statement summary

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows told Axios, "If the Trump administration were to go down that path, the individuals involved would be committing crimes", describing a protocol in Maine similar to the one New Mexico's secretary of state outlined for any ICE presence at polling places.

Why we used this label

The reference point is the administration's stated or threatened use of ICE and other armed federal agents at or near polling places in the 2026 election. Bellows said that people who deployed ICE agents to polling places would be committing crimes. That rejects the stated or threatened use as unlawful, so condemns fits better than mixed or conditional, because her conditional phrasing sets out a hypothetical and not a condition under which she would accept it.

Condemned

Statement summary

Bellows said Durán Guerrero did not deserve to be shot in the street in front of his young daughter and nearby families.

“We know the facts. He was a good guy. All of his neighbors said so. He was legally here, and you know what? Doesn’t matter. Nobody deserves to get shot in the streets when their 3-year-old daughter is still in her pajamas, and there are other kids and other families nearby just getting ready to work, getting ready to go about their day.”
