Statement summary

At an October 24 rally with Acton in Cleveland, Obama says Ramaswamy will do anything to get attention and that in recent days he has shown there is no line he will not cross.

“And in recent days, we've seen there is no line he will not cross, no low he will not sink to.”

Why we used this label

The reference point is the Ramaswamy campaign's use of Acton's estranged mother in its ad. The quoted sentence speaks of Ramaswamy's conduct in recent days, and CBS News reports that Obama went on in the same passage to say he did not know how standards fell so low that somebody could run an ad like that. Read with that passage, the remark criticizes the ad, so we labeled it Condemned.

Statement summary

Obama said the Trump administration is selectively targeting Omar for her political views and her criticism of the president. He said agents raided her home and seized her records and phone in search of evidence that does not exist, and he called the effort appalling.

“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. ... Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.”

Why we used this label

The question in this case is whether the search of Omar's home was legitimate law enforcement or political targeting. Obama says the administration is targeting her for her political views and describes the search as part of that effort.

Statement summary

At an event at Salem State University, former President Obama said he was not surprised by Trump's decision to ban CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, and called press freedom a foundational, non-partisan issue. He said no substantial group of Republicans had objected to the ban, and that a government excluding critics over their coverage is incompatible with democracy.

“The free press, the idea that the government cannot discriminate against, or pick on, or bully, or exclude somebody because they don’t like the criticism that’s being leveled at them, that is a foundational issue. And so, I am not surprised that the current president wants to ban newscasts that are critical of him, because he’s that guy.”

Why we used this label

Relative to Trump's decision to exclude CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House access because of their coverage, Obama calls the exclusion of critical outlets incompatible with a free press and democracy. That criticizes the exclusion, so we labeled it Condemned.

Statement summary

Obama said it would have been unimaginable for his administration to exclude Fox News in the way Trump excluded the three outlets.

“I’m trying to think what would have happened if I had said, you know what, Fox News, you’re out of here! It’s unimaginable!”

Why we used this label

Obama rejects the legitimacy of the exclusion by contrasting it with a hypothetical action by his own administration and calling that action unimaginable.

Statement summary

Barack Obama said voluntary AI industry standards are insufficient and called for government regulation.

“But at the end of the day, voluntary standards made by a handful of tech companies won't be enough. We need government – and specifically our leaders in Washington – to get proactive in coming up with concrete proposals, laws and regulations...”

Why we used this label

Obama argues voluntary industry standards are insufficient and calls for government regulation, implicitly rejecting self-regulation as adequate without condemning Anthropic specifically or calling for a development pause, a conditional policy position, consistent with how similar "calls for regulation" statements elsewhere in this case (e.g. Sam Altman, David Sacks) have been classified.

Statement summary

Obama argues that affirmative action gave excluded students an opportunity to demonstrate their merit and calls for renewed efforts after the ruling.

“Affirmative action was never a complete answer in the drive towards a more just society. But for generations of students who had been systematically excluded from most of America’s key institutions—it gave us the chance to show we more than deserved a seat at the table. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent decision, it’s time to redouble our efforts.”

Why we used this label

Obama criticizes the loss of the opportunities provided by race-conscious admissions and urges renewed efforts after the ruling. Acknowledging that the policy was incomplete does not express support for the Court decision.
