Overview

Blanche answered the question less than two weeks before the November 3 midterm elections. Common Dreams reports that the Justice Department sued Alaska the same day over its Senate certification, a suit covered in a separate case, and had earlier sued California seeking to keep the ballots of more than 20,000 registered voters from being counted on the ground that they may be noncitizens.

Raw Story reports that a day before the certification answer, Blanche told the New York Post podcast Pod Force One that he answers to President Trump. Common Dreams notes that Blanche and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin have declined to rule out sending immigration or other federal agents to polling places. Karalunas, a senior counsel in the Brennan Center's Democracy Program, says state certification processes include safeguards built to stop officials from manipulating outcomes.
