Should the Senate Judiciary Committee Subpoena Donald Trump Jr. Over His Kremlev-Funded Wedding Celebration?

Umar Kremlev, a Putin-linked Russian businessman, helped fund Trump Jr.'s wedding celebration. Trump first denied knowing Kremlev, then called it "totally allowed" and said he was repaid. Sen. John Curtis now wants Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden subpoenaed over family financial benefit.

Overview

Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association and a Putin ally sanctioned by Ukraine, helped fund a private-island celebration for Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump's May 2026 wedding, including a fireworks show, ProPublica reported in September 2026. Bettina Trump acknowledged the arrangement on Instagram, calling Kremlev a "dear friend." The same day, President Trump told NBC News he had "no idea who Umar is, never heard of him," and called it "not a big deal." Four days later, in the Oval Office, Trump instead defended the arrangement as "totally allowed" and said he understood Kremlev had been repaid. On September 21, Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) wrote the Senate Judiciary Committee asking it to subpoena both Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden, arguing the episode and Hunter Biden's past foreign business dealings both raise questions about "the use of presidential family relationships for private financial benefit." The Judiciary Committee had not committed to acting as of this writing.

ProPublica first reported (opens in a new tab) that Kremlev helped pay to rent a private island and stage a fireworks display following Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson's May 2026 wedding ceremony in the Bahamas. The couple had already legally married in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to a marriage document obtained by PEOPLE (opens in a new tab). Kremlev has led the International Boxing Association since 2020, received Russia's Order of Friendship medal from President Putin in 2026, and has been sanctioned by Ukraine's government. He and Trump Jr. have known each other since at least September 2025, when they appeared together at an IBA event in Turkey and Trump Jr. called him "a leader but a friend."

On September 14, Bettina Trump wrote on Instagram (opens in a new tab), signed jointly with Trump Jr., that "our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding," and that the island gathering had been planned in advance as a separate trip with friends. The same day, President Trump told NBC News (opens in a new tab) in a statement that he had "no idea who Umar is, never heard of him," that Umar "didn't pay for Don and Bettina's wedding," and called the episode "not a big deal." Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, wrote on X the same week asking what Kremlev "got in return" for the money he spent.

On September 18, Trump's account shifted (opens in a new tab): asked by reporters in the Oval Office, he called the arrangement "totally allowed," said "a lot of people have parties," and said that "as I understand it, he paid them back," adding "I hear he paid them back" without elaborating.

On September 21, Sen. John Curtis wrote to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and ranking member Dick Durbin (opens in a new tab), asking the committee to investigate "the use of presidential family relationships for private financial benefit" and to subpoena both Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden. Curtis's letter cites the Kremlev-funded celebration alongside Trump Jr.'s promotion of family-backed cryptocurrency ventures, international real estate deals, and ties to prediction-market platforms; on Hunter Biden, it cites his past business dealings with entities in China and Ukraine while his father held or sought office. Politico reports (opens in a new tab) that a Judiciary Committee Republican spokesperson confirmed Grassley had received the letter but could not commit to scheduling an investigation, citing a limited hearing calendar through the end of 2026.

Neither Donald Trump Jr. nor Hunter Biden had personally responded to Curtis's letter as of this writing.

The Kremlev-funded celebration, alongside Donald Trump Jr.'s business ties to foreign figures, raises legitimate questions about foreign access to a sitting president's family and possible expectations of a returned favor that could create national security vulnerabilities, warranting a congressional investigation and subpoenas of both Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden.

  4. Richard BlumenthalU.S. Senator (D-Conn.) and member of the Senate Judiciary Committee

    Before this statement

Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee's chairman and ranking member that week urging an investigation and subpoenas for Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden. Why this label?

The case's reference point is the Kremlev-funded celebration for Donald Trump Jr. and whether the Senate Judiciary Committee should investigate it. Blumenthal, a Judiciary Committee member, calls corruption like the Trump Jr. wedding gift blatant and dangerous to national security and says there is a real duty to investigate it. That expressly criticizes the conduct under scrutiny and backs an inquiry, so we labeled it Condemned.

  5. Hunter BidenAmerican lawyer, artist, and son of former President Joe Biden, in a post on X

    Before this statement

Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) had written the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 21 asking it to subpoena both Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden, arguing that the Kremlev-funded wedding celebration and Hunter Biden past foreign business dealings both raised questions about the use of presidential family relationships for private financial benefit.

"I say bring it on. Ive already given more than seven hours of sworn testimony. More than three dozen witnesses testified across two chambers. I had no foreign business dealings while my father was president. None. I painted paintings, and I still do. Ill sit next to Don Jr. and testify any time, any place."
    Challenged the characterization

Case context: Should the Senate Judiciary Committee Subpoena Donald Trump Jr. Over His Kremlev-Funded Wedding Celebration?

    Full statement and sources

Responding to Sen. Curtis letter asking the Judiciary Committee to subpoena both Donald Trump Jr. and himself, Hunter Biden said on X that he welcomed scrutiny, cited his prior sworn testimony, denied having foreign business dealings while his father was president, and offered to testify alongside Trump Jr. without a subpoena.

    After the statement

The Hill reported no immediate response from Donald Trump Jr. or his representatives to Hunter Biden offer to testify alongside him; the Judiciary Committee had not committed to acting on either subpoena request as of this writing.

Hunter Biden responds to GOP senator's subpoena request · The HillParagraphs quoting Hunter Biden's September 22 X post responding to Sen. Curtis's letter

    Why this label?

Relative to whether the Judiciary Committee should subpoena Donald Trump Jr., Hunter Biden does not evaluate Trump Jr.'s conduct at all; his statement is almost entirely a defense of his own record and a welcome of scrutiny of himself. This is a borderline call. The one line that touches the case reference point is his offer to sit next to Don Jr. and testify any time, any place, which implicitly disputes the premise that compulsory process (a subpoena) is necessary at all, since he offers voluntary joint testimony instead. On that narrow basis the position is "Challenged the characterization": he disputes that a subpoena, rather than voluntary cooperation, is the warranted response to the family-financial-benefit theory in the Curtis letter, which named him alongside Trump Jr. It is not "Defended or excused" because he never argues Trump Jr.'s conduct was proper, and not "Condemned" because he never criticizes Trump Jr. either.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

  6. John CornynRepublican U.S. senator from Texas and senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, speaking to reporters after a GOP leadership meeting

    Before this statement

Sen. John Cornyn said after a GOP leadership meeting that he backed Sen. Curtis request for the Senate Judiciary Committee to subpoena Donald Trump Jr. over the Kremlev-funded wedding celebration.

    After the statement

The Hill reported Sen. Thom Tillis, another Judiciary Committee member, separately said the arrangement raised serious questions but stopped short of endorsing a subpoena immediately.

Two Republicans back GOP senator's call for Trump Jr. probe · The HillParagraph beginning "Im with Sen. Curtis" quoting Sen. John Cornyn after a GOP leadership meeting

    Why this label?

Relative to whether the Judiciary Committee should subpoena Donald Trump Jr., Cornyn expressly aligns himself with Curtis request for that subpoena. This follows the classification already applied to Sen. Durbin similar statement of support for Curtis request in this case: backing an investigation into conduct under scrutiny is treated as a condemnation of leaving that conduct unexamined, not as a defense of Trump Jr. It is not “Defended or excused”, since Cornyn says nothing in justification of the wedding arrangement itself; it is not “Mixed or conditional”, since his support carries no stated condition.

    After the statement

Tillis added that if the House flips in the 2027 midterms there would be an investigation one way or another regardless of the Judiciary Committee current posture.

More Republicans Come Out in Favor of Don Jr. Subpoena Over Putin Pal-Funded WeddingParagraph quoting Sen. Thom Tillis on the wedding events showing "colossally bad judgment at best"

    Why this label?

Relative to whether the Judiciary Committee should subpoena Donald Trump Jr. now, Tillis combines materially different positions. He is critical of the underlying conduct, calling it colossally bad judgment at best and saying it looks pretty dumb on its face, which leans toward condemnation of the arrangement. But on the case central question, a subpoena, he explicitly declined to say whether he would support one now and instead conditioned any Judiciary Committee investigation on the outcome of the election: after the election, if everybodys still interested in it, then lets do it. That express, unresolved timing condition on the committee action itself, combined with criticism of the conduct short of calling for present subpoena, is a “Mixed or conditional” position rather than a clean condemns or “Defended or excused”.

  3. John CurtisU.S. Senator for Utah, in a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee and on XDirectly involved

    Before this statement

Curtis had separately called the arrangement "corruption" in social media remarks over the preceding weekend: "Another low, a Russian oligarch paid for a lavish wedding after-party for Donald Trump Jr., which to me just stinks. It's corruption, I don't like it."

"A toaster is a wedding gift. A private-island party paid for by a Putin-connected oligarch is something else. Republicans nearly wore out the subpoena machine investigating Hunter Biden's foreign relationships. We should not unplug it now. The country should not have to accept one standard for the family of a Republican president and another for the family of a Democratic president. Nor should congressional oversight begin and end when control of the White House changes hands."

Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) wrote to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and ranking member Dick Durbin asking the committee to investigate "the use of presidential family relationships for private financial benefit" and to subpoena both Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden. On X, he wrote that "a private-island party paid for by a Putin-connected oligarch" is not an ordinary wedding gift, and that "the country should not have to accept one standard" for a Republican president's family "and another" for a Democratic president's.

    After the statement

A spokesperson for Judiciary Committee Republicans confirmed Grassley received the letter but could not commit to investigating, citing a limited hearing calendar through the end of 2026.

    Why this label?

Curtis directly characterizes the arrangement as corruption ("which to me just stinks. It's corruption, I don't like it.") and formally requests a congressional subpoena and investigation, a clear denunciation of the episode and a call for accountability.

He said giving wedding parties to people is "very common" and that he has done so himself.

    After the statement

Trump did not provide details on how or when Kremlev was repaid.

Trump says his son’s wedding party being bankrolled by a Russian oligarch is ‘totally allowed’ (AP) · Associated PressOpening paragraphs, quoting Trump's Oval Office remarks

    Why this label?

Relative to whether Donald Trump Jr.'s acceptance of a Kremlev-funded wedding celebration was improper, Trump now expressly defends the arrangement as permissible ("totally allowed") and normalizes it by comparing it to his own practice of giving wedding parties, rather than disputing that it happened or downplaying it as in his September 14 statement. It supersedes that statement because it is Trump's own account of the same episode, now accepting and defending facts (Kremlev's identity and involvement) that his earlier statement disputed.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

  5. Robert GarciaU.S. Representative for California and ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, on X

    Before this statement

Garcia posted the same week Bettina Trump's Instagram acknowledgment and ProPublica's report became public.

Case context: Should the Senate Judiciary Committee Subpoena Donald Trump Jr. Over His Kremlev-Funded Wedding Celebration?

    Full statement and sources

On X, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, said Kremlev "spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the President's son," asked "what did he get in return," and said "we need answers."

    After the statement

Garcia separately sent a letter to the White House and Trump Jr. demanding information, according to Politico.

Donald Trump Jr. acknowledges Russian oligarch with ties to Putin paid for wedding celebration (NBC News) · NBC NewsParagraphs quoting Bettina Trump's Instagram statement, President Trump's statement to NBC News, and Rep. Robert Garcia's X post

    Why this label?

Relative to whether Donald Trump Jr.'s acceptance of a Kremlev-funded wedding celebration was improper, Garcia directly questions what Kremlev received in exchange for his spending and demands answers, expressing suspicion of the arrangement rather than accepting it as ordinary.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

  6. Donald TrumpPresident of the United States, in a statement to NBC NewsDirectly involved

    Before this statement

The statement was issued the same day, September 14, 2026, that Bettina Trump acknowledged Kremlev's role on Instagram.

"I have no idea who Umar is, never heard of him, and he didn’t pay for Don and Bettina’s wedding, which took place at a totally different location, and on a different day from the wedding. It was an ‘afterparty’ given in their honor. Not a big deal! I was not present at the party."
    Minimized

Responding to: Kremlev funding a wedding-related celebration for Donald Trump Jr. is an ordinary, permissible gift, comparable to wedding gifts other people receive, and Kremlev has since been repaid.

    Full statement and sources

In a statement to NBC News the same day Bettina Trump's Instagram post appeared, President Trump said he had "no idea who Umar is, never heard of him," and disputed that Kremlev "paid for" the wedding as opposed to a separate "afterparty," calling the whole matter "not a big deal."

    After the statement

Four days later, Trump gave a different account, described in a later statement.

Donald Trump Jr. acknowledges Russian oligarch with ties to Putin paid for wedding celebration (NBC News) · NBC NewsParagraphs quoting Bettina Trump's Instagram statement, President Trump's statement to NBC News, and Rep. Robert Garcia's X post

    Why this label?

Relative to whether Donald Trump Jr.'s acceptance of a Kremlev-funded wedding celebration was improper, Trump neither confirms nor flatly denies that an afterparty funded in part by Kremlev took place; he disputes his own familiarity with Kremlev and disputes that Kremlev paid for the wedding itself as opposed to a separate afterparty, while dismissing the episode as "not a big deal." The dominant thrust downplays the episode's significance rather than defending it as proper, so minimizes fits better than “Defended or excused”; four days later he gave a different, more forthcoming account, recorded as a separate, later statement.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

  7. Bettina TrumpWife of Donald Trump Jr., on her Instagram account, in a post signed jointly with him

    Before this statement

The post followed ProPublica's report that Kremlev helped fund the celebration.

"Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding. It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful. It's unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from. Friendship doesn't require a political motive. Generosity doesn't automatically come with an agenda. And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift."
    Defended or excused

Responding to: Kremlev funding a wedding-related celebration for Donald Trump Jr. is an ordinary, permissible gift, comparable to wedding gifts other people receive, and Kremlev has since been repaid.

    Full statement and sources

On Instagram, in a post signed jointly with Donald Trump Jr., Bettina Trump called Kremlev "our dear friend" who "very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations" after their wedding, called it "an extraordinarily generous wedding gift," and wrote that "sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift." She also wrote that the island trip had been planned in advance separately from their wedding.

    After the statement

Bettina Trump also wrote that the island trip had "been planned well in advance as a fun weekend with friends" and "was never intended to be our wedding weekend," and that they "decided to get married before it and arrived at an already planned weekend as newlyweds."

Donald Trump Jr. acknowledges Russian oligarch with ties to Putin paid for wedding celebration (NBC News) · NBC NewsParagraphs quoting Bettina Trump's Instagram statement, President Trump's statement to NBC News, and Rep. Robert Garcia's X post

    Why this label?

Relative to whether Donald Trump Jr.'s acceptance of a Kremlev-funded wedding celebration was improper, Bettina Trump frames Kremlev's role as ordinary personal generosity between friends and explicitly rejects any political or improper characterization, which defends the acceptance of the gift as unremarkable.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

Previous language
[ProPublica first reported](https://www.propublica.org/article/donald-trump-jr-wedding-bankrolled-russian-oligarch-umar-kremlev-putin) that Kremlev helped pay to rent a private island and stage a fireworks display after Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson married in West Palm Beach, Florida in May 2026.
Corrected language
[ProPublica first reported](https://www.propublica.org/article/donald-trump-jr-wedding-bankrolled-russian-oligarch-umar-kremlev-putin) that Kremlev helped pay to rent a private island and stage a fireworks display following Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson's May 2026 wedding ceremony in the Bahamas. The couple had already legally married in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to a marriage document [obtained by PEOPLE](https://people.com/donald-trump-jr-celebrates-marriage-to-bettina-anderson-with-bahamas-ceremony-11954082).

Clarification: The previous context mentioned a West Palm Beach marriage without distinguishing it from the Bahamas ceremony. We have clarified the sequence and added sourcing for the earlier legal marriage.

This corrects our account of what happened.
