Overview
ProPublica first reported (opens in a new tab) that Kremlev helped pay to rent a private island and stage a fireworks display after Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson married in West Palm Beach, Florida in May 2026. Kremlev has led the International Boxing Association since 2020, received Russia's Order of Friendship medal from President Putin in 2026, and has been sanctioned by Ukraine's government. He and Trump Jr. have known each other since at least September 2025, when they appeared together at an IBA event in Turkey and Trump Jr. called him "a leader but a friend."
On September 14, Bettina Trump wrote on Instagram (opens in a new tab), signed jointly with Trump Jr., that "our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding," and that the island gathering had been planned in advance as a separate trip with friends. The same day, President Trump told NBC News (opens in a new tab) in a statement that he had "no idea who Umar is, never heard of him," that Umar "didn't pay for Don and Bettina's wedding," and called the episode "not a big deal." Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, wrote on X the same week asking what Kremlev "got in return" for the money he spent.
