Cea Weaver’s “impoverish the white middle class” and homeownership remarks

A deleted November 2018 post attributed to Cea Weaver said, “Impoverish the white middle class. Homeownership is racist / failed public policy.” Critics called it racist or disqualifying; defenders cited her tenant advocacy. Weaver expressed regret for some old wording without specifically retracting this sentence.

Overview

The original post is deleted, but a screenshot and multiple independent reproductions support its authenticity. Weaver’s other remarks linked homeownership and private property to white supremacy and argued for treating housing more as a collective good. The historical premise that discriminatory housing policy helped create racial wealth and ownership gaps is well supported; whether that context excuses or changes the meaning of the race-specific imperative is disputed.

    1. Mamdani names Weaver as his designee to New York City's new land bank board

A City Hall spokesperson tells Gothamist that Mayor Zohran Mamdani has named Cea Weaver, his director of the Office to Protect Tenants, as his designee to the board of a new city land bank created to handle properties with large tax debts or in disrepair. Unlike the mayor's other nominee to the board, a designee does not require City Council approval. The report concerns the land bank programme and does not mention the 2018 posts or the objections to Weaver's appointment; it is recorded here as a dated development in the role at issue in this case, not as a response to the dispute.

Mamdani named his director of the Office to Protect Tenants, Cea Weaver, as his designee to the land bank board, a City Hall spokesperson said. Weaver, an advocate for the land bank model, has helped shape the administration's efforts to steer sales of apartment buildings facing bankruptcy or foreclosure or exposing tenants to dangerous living conditions.

Arguments

  1. Editorial analysis

Weaver's wording called for impoverishing a racial group

The central sentence is explicitly race-specific and imperative: it calls to impoverish the white middle class rather than merely describing past discrimination. Its ordinary wording supports critics who call it racialized or racist.

    Limit of this argument

The sentence does not specify a concrete mechanism or prove that Weaver has carried out discriminatory policy.

    Read sources and related claim

    Related claim

On November 19, 2018, Cea Weaver posted: “Impoverish the white middle class. Homeownership is racist / failed public policy.”

  2. Editorial analysis

The homeownership remarks formed a continuing policy critique

Related posts and later remarks show a continuing critique of private property and homeownership, making it harder to dismiss the 2018 sentence as an isolated joke or typo.

    Limit of this argument

The record supports proposals to reduce housing’s role as a private wealth vehicle, but not a proven immediate plan to confiscate every homeowner’s property.

    Read sources and related claim

    Related claim

Weaver later described private property, especially homeownership, as a weapon of white supremacy presented as wealth-building policy.

    Sources

  1. Editorial analysis

Housing discrimination provides context for Weaver's structural critique

Weaver’s broader critique addresses a documented history in which public and private housing systems subsidized white wealth-building while excluding many Black families. Defenders can distinguish that structural argument from hostility toward individual white homeowners.

    Limit of this argument

Historical discrimination does not alter the literal race-specific wording of the 2018 call to impoverish the white middle class.

    Read sources and related claim

    Related claim

Weaver described homeownership as racist and failed public policy.

  2. Documented position

Cea Weaver, Zohran Mamdani, NYC-DSA and Morris Katz.

Weaver expressed regret, while allies defended her tenant advocacy

Weaver later expressed regret for some old wording, said her present aim includes renters and owners, and has a substantial tenant-advocacy record that Mamdani and allies cite in defending her appointment.

    Limit of this argument

Her response did not identify or fully retract the exact 2018 sentence, and defenders largely praised her record rather than directly endorsing the wording.

    Read sources and related claim

    Related claim

Weaver said some old statements were regretful and were not how she would phrase things today.

Responding to: Weaver said some old statements were regretful and were not how she would phrase things today.

    Full statement and sources

Weaver expressed qualified regret for some older wording while defending her record and current housing goals.

    After the statement

She emphasized her experience and said she wants safe, affordable housing for renters and owners.

    Why this label?

This is a partial disavowal of wording, not a specific retraction of the central 2018 sentence or the underlying housing-policy views.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

Corrections address errors in our reporting or labels. When a speaker changes their position, we add a separate statement and link it to the earlier one.

Reporting correction

Correction to: Statement by J. Marc Wheat

Previous language
This statement quoted J. Marc Wheat and Davison Drumm as writing "sacred right to seize private property... a weapon of white supremacy masquerading as "wealth building" public policy," and its summary said they cited Cea Weaver's remarks about a government "sacred right to seize private property."
Corrected language
This statement now quotes the sentence in which Wheat and Drumm write that Weaver has shown disdain for private property and "ESPECIALLY homeownership," which she claimed "is a weapon of white supremacy masquerading as 'wealth building' public policy." Its summary now says they wrote that Weaver has said she would like to "seize private property."

We attributed the phrase "sacred right to seize private property" to the Washington Examiner op-ed by Wheat and Drumm in error. The op-ed does not contain that phrase, which appears in a separate Washington Examiner op-ed by George Landrith. The op-ed by Wheat and Drumm says Weaver would like to "seize private property" and describes her as claiming that homeownership "is a weapon of white supremacy masquerading as 'wealth building' public policy."

This corrects our account of what happened.

Washington Examiner op-ed: "SCOTUS must restore property rights before DSA abolishes them" (opens in a new tab)

Washington Examiner op-ed by AAF general counsel J. Marc Wheat and research assistant Davison Drumm, citing Cea Weaver's remarks as evidence for a broader argument about property rights.
