Pat Ryan says Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth "is engaged in a coverup," says that 22 servicemembers "made the ultimate sacrifice," and says Trump and Hegseth are trying to "sweep it under the rug." The release presents the call as following the Washington Post's Sept. 18 report, in which six officials said at least 22 or 23 service members have died, against 18 in the Pentagon's public database.

Why we used this label

Ryan expresses criticism: he says Hegseth "is engaged in a coverup," puts the number of servicemembers who "made the ultimate sacrifice" at 22, and says Trump and Hegseth would "rather dishonor our fallen heroes than tell the truth." Members of the 103rd Sustainment Command told CBS News, on condition of anonymity, that the Port Shuaiba post was not a fortified position, had no capability to defend against drones, and that describing the drone as one that "squeaked through" was false.

“No counter drone capabilities. No counter rocket systems. No counter mortar or counter artillery. Not even the basic overhead protection that you and I had 20 years ago in Iraq. And now, six of our soldiers are dead.”
