Meta suspends No Kings Instagram account during protest day, then calls it an automated error

Meta took the No Kings Coalition's Instagram offline during its October 17 day of action. Meta called it an automated error, first citing posting volume and then a Claude tool's reading activity. Organizers and Democratic senators question the explanation.

Overview

The No Kings Coalition's Instagram account went offline at about 1:30 p.m. Eastern on October 17, 2026, as thousands of No Kings early-voting events took place. The coalition said it had no access to the account for hours after it became visible again.

That evening Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said very high-frequency posting, sharing or commenting had triggered automated systems and apologized for the error. The coalition said it had posted only a few times. On October 18 Stone said the trigger was mainly the account's reading behavior: Meta's security systems detected a Claude tool reading profiles, posts and hashtags in bursts that resembled bot traffic. Meta has not said who ran the tool, and we could not independently verify its account of its systems.

Andy Stone

Meta's automated protections incorrectly took the No Kings Instagram account offline after its network security systems detected a Claude tool reading profiles, posts and hashtags in high-volume bursts that resembled bot traffic.

  1. Judd LegumFounder and writer of the Popular Information newsletter

    Before this statement

Legum quotes Stone's first explanation and the coalition's response to it.

"Meta’s action against No Kings is the latest in a series of “errors” impacting the accounts of Trump critics."
    Challenged the characterization

Case context: Meta suspends No Kings Instagram account during protest day, then calls it an automated error

    Full statement and sources

Legum places the suspension in a series of Meta actions affecting Trump critics that the company has called errors.

    After the statement

He cites restrictions on Brazilian President Lula's accounts, the suspension of Albanian protest groups' Instagram accounts and Meta's initial rejection of ads for the documentary Musk.

    Why this label?

The reference point is Meta's October 17, 2026 suspension of the No Kings Coalition Instagram account during the coalition's day of action. Legum puts the word errors in quotation marks and lists other cases, which disputes Meta's description of the suspension as an isolated mistake.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

  2. No Kings CoalitionOrganizer of the No Kings protests and operator of the suspended accountDirectly involved

    Before this statement

Stone had posted an updated explanation earlier on October 18 that cited a Claude tool's reading activity.

"Meta’s explanation still doesn’t add up."
    Challenged the characterization

Responding to: Meta's automated protections incorrectly took the No Kings Instagram account offline after its network security systems detected a Claude tool reading profiles, posts and hashtags in high-volume bursts that resembled bot traffic.

    Full statement and sources

The No Kings Coalition says Meta's explanation of the suspension still does not add up.

    After the statement

The coalition had said it posted only a handful of times in the 24 hours before the suspension and remained locked out for hours after the account reappeared.

    Why this label?

The reference point is Meta's October 17, 2026 suspension of the No Kings Coalition Instagram account during the coalition's day of action. The coalition disputes Meta's account of why the suspension happened, which challenges the company's description of it as an automated error.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

  3. Chris MurphyU.S. senator from Connecticut

    Before this statement

Murphy was quoting Stone's October 18 update attributing the suspension to a Claude tool's reading activity.

"Let’s assume this is true. It’s still a total indictment of Meta’s outsized influence on our culture and politics."
    Condemned

Responding to: Meta's automated protections incorrectly took the No Kings Instagram account offline after its network security systems detected a Claude tool reading profiles, posts and hashtags in high-volume bursts that resembled bot traffic.

    Full statement and sources

Murphy says that even if Meta's explanation is accurate, the episode shows Meta's outsized influence, and he calls for an investigation.

    After the statement

He says Meta should have been ready for the biggest anti-Trump protest day of the campaign and that an investigation is warranted.

Andy Stone X post updating Meta's explanation of the No Kings Instagram suspension · Andy StonePost, October 18, 2026, 4:41 p.m. Eastern

    Why this label?

The reference point is Meta's October 17, 2026 suspension of the No Kings Coalition Instagram account during the coalition's day of action. Murphy accepts Meta's explanation for argument's sake and still criticizes the company for failing to prepare for the protest day, which condemns its handling of the suspension.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

  4. Chris Van HollenU.S. senator from Maryland

    Before this statement

About four hours earlier, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone had called the suspension an automated error and said the account was working again.

"Unacceptable. Meta took down the No Kings Instagram today and kept it offline for well over an hour. Censoring free speech to appease Donald Trump?"
    Condemned

Case context: Meta suspends No Kings Instagram account during protest day, then calls it an automated error

    Full statement and sources

Van Hollen calls the takedown unacceptable and asks whether Meta was censoring speech to appease Donald Trump.

    After the statement

He adds that people deserve answers and will not be silenced.

    Why this label?

The reference point is Meta's October 17, 2026 suspension of the No Kings Coalition Instagram account during the coalition's day of action. Van Hollen calls it unacceptable and raises censorship as a possible motive in a question, which condemns the suspension without asserting the motive as fact.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

  5. Andy StoneMeta communications executive and company spokespersonDirectly involved

    Before this statement

The account had gone offline at about 1:30 p.m. Eastern, during the coalition's October 17 day of action.

"When accounts post, share or comment at very high frequencies it can trigger automated systems. That's what happened with the No Kings IG account in the lead up to today's day of action. Unfortunately, that automated action was clearly taken in error. Everything is now working as it should and we sincerely apologize."
    Mixed or conditional

Responding to: The No Kings Instagram account was taken down by automated systems that very high-frequency posting, sharing or commenting triggered in the lead-up to the day of action.

    Full statement and sources

Stone says the account's high-frequency activity triggered automated systems, calls the action an error and apologizes.

    After the statement

The next day Stone posted an update saying the spike was mainly in the account's reading behavior, which Meta's systems attributed to a Claude tool.

    Why this label?

The reference point is Meta's October 17, 2026 suspension of the No Kings Coalition Instagram account during the coalition's day of action. Stone concedes the suspension was wrong and apologizes, while attributing it to automated systems reacting to the account's own activity. That pairs an admission with an explanation that excuses the company, so neither condemns nor defends fits alone.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

  6. Common CauseNonpartisan government accountability organization

    Before this statement

Meta had suspended the No Kings Coalition's Instagram account during the coalition's October 17 day of action.

"Silencing a nationwide protest on the Early Vote Day of Action is an alarming act of corporate censorship that strikes at the heart of our democracy."
    Condemned

Case context: Meta suspends No Kings Instagram account during protest day, then calls it an automated error

    Full statement and sources

Common Cause calls the suspension corporate censorship and asks Meta to restore the account.

    After the statement

The post asks supporters to tell Meta to restore the account immediately.

    Why this label?

The reference point is Meta's October 17, 2026 suspension of the No Kings Coalition Instagram account during the coalition's day of action. Common Cause calls it an alarming act of corporate censorship, which condemns it.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.
