Overview

Vang and Matsui, both Democrats, finished first and second in California's top-two primary and meet again in November. Matsui has held the seat for more than 20 years. According to The Sacramento Bee, Matsui's campaign also asked local officials who endorsed Vang, including Sacramento council members Caity Maple and Karina Talamantes and state Sen. Angelique Ashby, to rescind their endorsements, and council member Lisa Kaplan, who backs Matsui, denounced Vang's decision. Piker has faced criticism for saying "America deserved 9/11" and for calling the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack a "direct consequence" of Israeli and U.S. government actions. He has apologized for the 9/11 remark and denies accusations of antisemitism. Near the end of the stream, Piker said it had raised nearly $50,000 for Vang.
