JD Vance questions James Talarico's internet search history; Jake Tapper says Vance twisted Talarico's words
Vance twice suggested that James Talarico's internet search history would be disturbing and joked about Talarico's sexuality at a Tyler rally. Asked by reporters, he said he was just guessing. Jake Tapper and Joe Scarborough criticized the remarks.

Overview
Talarico, a Democratic state representative and former San Antonio teacher who studied at a Presbyterian seminary, faces Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the November 3, 2026, election for U.S. Senate in Texas. Republicans have attacked Talarico over his past statements on gender, religion and transgender issues, and at the Tyler rally Vance called him "Tali-freako."
At the Tyler rally, Vance said Talarico was asked what he loves in life besides family and friends and answered "trans children." The Daily Wire reported in March 2026 that the answer came on an August 2023 episode of the A Superbloom podcast, where Talarico said he loved "the trans children who showed up yesterday at the state capitol to advocate for their humanity."
In his answer to reporters, Vance said Talarico had said something to the effect that an 11-year-old in drag was "a very beautiful thing." The San Antonio Current reported that Vance appeared to be referring to a 2021 event Talarico attended that featured an 11-year-old drag performer, and that there was no evidence Talarico had made a specific statement about the child's performance. We did not locate a public response from Talarico or his campaign to the search-history remarks as of October 18, 2026.

Raven-SymonéGuest host of ABC's The ViewBefore this statement
The View played Vance's comment on the tarmac while campaigning for Ken Paxton, "I'm the Vice President, not James Talarico", and a host asked whether that kind of personal attack would sway voters.
"Also, JD Vance, no one asked if you were gay. You're literally just saying it out of nowhere, which makes me go, hmm."
CondemnedCase context: JD Vance questions James Talarico's internet search history; Jake Tapper says Vance twisted Talarico's words
Full statement and sources
On The View, guest host Raven-Symoné says no one asked Vance whether he was gay, says Republicans keep using gay and vegan as slurs, and calls Vance's line a dad joke that did not land.
After the statement
She went on to say Republicans keep using gay and vegan as slurs and called Vance's line "a dad joke that did not land very well".
Why this label?
The reference point is Vance's remarks about Talarico's internet search history and sexuality. Raven-Symoné criticizes Vance's line about Talarico, saying it came out of nowhere and that using gay as a slur is outdated, so we labeled it Condemned. The closest competing label is Challenged the characterization; it loses because she criticizes the joke itself rather than disputing a description of it.
This label describes the statement's response within the context above.
Joe ScarboroughCo-host of MS NOW's Morning JoeBefore this statement
Morning Joe played Vance's Tyler rally remark and his answer to reporters, in which he said, "Maybe he doesn't. Just guessing."
"That is disgusting. You're disgusting because he's going back to a time five years ago, maybe six years ago, whatever."
CondemnedResponding to: People who say the kinds of things James Talarico has said about transgender children and drag tend to have unusual internet search histories, so Talarico's search history would be disturbing to see.
Full statement and sources
On Morning Joe, Scarborough calls Vance's remark about Talarico's search history disgusting and says Vance is reaching back years into Talarico's past.
After the statement
Scarborough said Vance was going back to the period when Vance had compared Trump to Hitler, and said of the remark, "It's always either projection or confession."
MS NOW: Morning Joe segment on Vance's remarks about Talarico · MS NOW01:32-02:30Why this label?
The reference point is Vance's remarks about Talarico's internet search history and sexuality. Scarborough calls the remark and Vance disgusting, so we labeled it Condemned. The closest competing label is Challenged the characterization, because he also questions Vance's use of old statements; it loses because his main point is moral criticism of the remark.
This label describes the statement's response within the context above.
Joe SaundersStory editor at The Western Journal Before this statement
Saunders quoted Vance's answer to reporters and noted that Forbes had used the word "unfounded" in its headline about Vance's statements.
"But how "unfounded" is it, really? Even Democrats have to understand that there's something very strange about Talarico"
Defended or excusedResponding to: People who say the kinds of things James Talarico has said about transgender children and drag tend to have unusual internet search histories, so Talarico's search history would be disturbing to see.
Full statement and sources
In a Western Journal commentary, Saunders defends Vance's remark, disputes the description of it as unfounded, says there is something very strange about Talarico, and cites Talarico's 2021 remark that God is non-binary and a Washington Free Beacon report that he headlined a 2021 event featuring a child drag performer.
After the statement
He cited Talarico's 2021 remark that "God is non-binary" and a Washington Free Beacon report that Talarico headlined a 2021 event that featured an 11-year-old drag performer, and asked whether anyone would be surprised by what Talarico's search history contained.
Why this label?
The reference point is Vance's remarks about Talarico's internet search history and sexuality. Saunders argues that the search-history remark is not unfounded and that Talarico's own record invites it, so we labeled it Defended or excused. The closest competing label is Challenged the characterization, because he disputes the word "unfounded"; it loses because he goes on to argue that Vance's point is justified.
This label describes the statement's response within the context above.
JD VanceVice President of the United StatesDirectly involvedBefore this statement
Vance listed past Talarico remarks on religion and gender and asked the crowd, "What are the other four genders?"
"Now, the best part about this guy is, you know, he was asked what he loves in life besides his own family and friends and he responded without skipping a beat, and I quote, trans children. Now, you got to wonder what the internet search history of a man like that looks like. Ladies and gentlemen, you don't want to find out."
Defended or excusedResponding to: James Talarico, asked what he loves in life besides his own family and friends, answered "trans children."
Full statement and sources
At a rally for Ken Paxton in Tyler, Texas, Vance says Talarico named trans children as something he loves besides family and friends, and says the crowd would not want to find out what Talarico's internet search history looks like.
After the statement
Vance continued with "Neither do I" and later told the crowd, "Ladies and gentlemen, this guy is a freak. Don't elect him."

The reference point is Vance's remarks about Talarico's internet search history and sexuality. After first raising Talarico's browser history at the Republican convention in Dallas in September, Vance repeats the suggestion to the rally crowd and ties it to Talarico's answer about trans children, so we labeled it Defended or excused, meaning he stands by the remark rather than withdrawing it. The closest competing label is Mixed or conditional; it loses because he adds no qualification at the rally.
This label describes the statement's response within the context above.
JD VanceVice President of the United StatesDirectly involvedBefore this statement
A reporter asked Vance what he meant when he said he would not want to see Talarico's search history. Vance answered that Talarico is "just a guy who shows a weird focus on transgender kids and drag queens" and said Talarico had said something to the effect that an 11-year-old in drag was "a very beautiful thing."
"He says a lot of weird stuff, and I think typically people who say stuff like that tend to have some pretty unusual search histories. Maybe he doesn't, just guessing, but I wouldn't want to see it."

The reference point is Vance's remarks about Talarico's internet search history and sexuality. Asked to explain his earlier remark, Vance restates it and gives his reasons, so we labeled it Defended or excused. The closest competing label is Mixed or conditional, because he says "Maybe he doesn't, just guessing"; it loses because he keeps the suggestion and says he would not want to see the history.
This label describes the statement's response within the context above.
Jake TapperAnchor of CNN's The LeadBefore this statement
Tapper said the campaign had reached a stage "where the vice president is insinuating that [Talarico] is gay", and CNN then played Vance's reply to a supporter at the Tyler rally.
"It's worse than that. A Talarico statement in the past in which Talarico was trying to express compassion for trans kids was twisted by the vice president into, well, this."
Challenged the characterizationResponding to: James Talarico, asked what he loves in life besides his own family and friends, answered "trans children."
Full statement and sources
On CNN's The Lead, Tapper says Vance is insinuating that Talarico is gay and says Vance twisted a past Talarico statement expressing compassion for trans kids, before CNN plays Vance's search-history remark.
After the statement
After CNN played Vance's search-history remark, Tapper said, "Not exactly the sign of a party convinced that they can win on their record or on ideas".
Mediaite reports Jake Tapper's comments on Vance's Talarico remarks · MediaiteFull articleWhy this label?
The reference point is Vance's remarks about Talarico's internet search history and sexuality. Tapper says Vance twisted Talarico's earlier statement about trans kids, disputing the basis Vance gave for the remark, so we labeled it Challenged the characterization. The closest competing label is Condemned, because Tapper also calls the attack a sign of a party unsure it can win on its record; it loses because his central point is that Vance misrepresented Talarico's words.
This label describes the statement's response within the context above.
