“Come on. They killed the hostages on purpose?”

Why we used this label

The reference point is Israeli fire on October 7, 2023, under or in the manner of the Hannibal Directive, that put Israeli captives at risk of being killed by Israeli forces. Carlson responds to Blumenthal's account with incredulous questions and then calls it "so evil," without stating his own conclusion about what happened. His judgment depends on the account being true. The closest competing label is Condemned, but his remarks are framed as questions about whether the account is real.

Defended or excused

Statement summary

Tucker Carlson defended Macklemore's "Free Palestine" remarks as legitimate criticism of a government rather than antisemitism, and called Robert Kraft's role in Macklemore's tour removal "censorship" and "very foolish."

“Criticism of the behavior of a secular government is not criticism of an entire people, many of whom disapprove... That is not Jew hate... it's not a defense of any one person. It's a defense of the truth... the inalienable right of every person to express their views.”

Why we used this label

Carlson directly defends Macklemore's 'Free Palestine' remarks as legitimate criticism of a government rather than antisemitism, and explicitly condemns Robert Kraft's role in the tour removal as censorship, a clear defense of Macklemore's conduct and condemnation of the response to it.

Condemned

Statement summary

In his September 11 newsletter, Tucker Carlson rejected Mike Rogers's characterisation of Abdul El-Sayed's 2021 remarks about the aftermath of September 11, writing that El-Sayed had not celebrated the attacks and was obviously right that the American response amounted to terrorism of its own. Carlson turned Rogers's "unfit to serve" language back on him, said he hoped Michigan voters would keep Rogers "far away from Washington," and had separately said on his podcast that he would not vote for Rogers "at gunpoint."

“El-Sayed did not celebrate airplane hijackings or cheerlead Al-Qaeda; he simply said that the U.S. conducting terrorism of its own in response to 9/11 was not exactly an appropriate reaction. He is obviously right.”

Why we used this label

Carlson rejects that assertion, distinguishes what El-Sayed actually said from celebrating the attacks, and criticises Rogers for making the charge. The closest competing label is “Challenged the characterization”, since much of the passage disputes how Rogers described El-Sayed's remarks. That loses because Carlson does not stop at correcting the description; he condemns Rogers's judgment and fitness for office in terms directed at the accusation itself.
