Alexandria Ocasio-CortezU.S. representative for New York's 14th district, in a post on Threads

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said ICE agents fired multiple shots at a man in his vehicle while his 5-year-old child was in the back seat. She called for a full and independent investigation and the immediate release of all body camera footage, said the Target Corporation must stop offering its Bronx properties as staging sites for ICE, and said ICE should not exist and should be abolished.

“ICE is a rogue, lawless paramilitary and surveillance agency. It does not belong in New York City and it should not exist in the United States of America. Abolish ICE.”

Where this statement fits

Was ICE justified in shooting a man in a car in Marble Hill?

On October 8, 2026, an ICE officer shot a man in a car near Marble Hill Avenue and West 225th Street in Marble Hill, a neighborhood the NYPD placed in the Bronx and ABC News and The Intercept placed in upper Manhattan. DHS said ICE officers were conducting a targeted operation in the Bronx to arrest a man from the Dominican Republic with a prior grand larceny conviction and multiple prior arrests, and that an officer discharged his weapon during the incident. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said early reports indicated agents surrounded the man and his 5-year-old child in the car before firing multiple rounds. The NYPD said it was not involved and that the man was conscious at a hospital. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch later said evidence at the scene indicates at least one ICE agent discharged seven rounds, striking the driver in the neck. As of October 9, DHS had not said what prompted the officer to fire.

Before the quotation

Ocasio-Cortez posted the statement on Threads at 11:52 p.m. EDT, nearly eight hours after the shooting. It opens by saying ICE agents fired multiple shots at a man in his vehicle while his 5-year-old child was in the back seat.

After the quotation

The statement also calls for "a full and independent investigation of this incident" and the immediate release of all body camera footage, and says the Target Corporation must stop offering its Bronx properties as private staging sites for ICE. On October 5, eight elected officials had asked Target and Kingsbridge Associates to bar ICE from a West 225th Street parking lot.

How this statement is classified

Condemned

The label describes this statement's response within the context above.

Why this label?

The reference point is whether the ICE officer was justified in shooting the man in the car. Ocasio-Cortez calls the shooting "a grave development" that requires an immediate response to protect New Yorkers, demands an independent investigation and the release of body camera footage, and calls ICE "a rogue, lawless paramilitary and surveillance agency" that should not exist. That rejects the shooting as justified, so we labeled it Condemned. The closest competing label is Mixed or conditional, which would fit a call for an investigation alone; she states a conclusion about the agency.

Mamdani says "There is no explanation for these tactics" after the Marble Hill shooting

Zohran Mamdani

“There is no explanation for these tactics. There is no explanation for federal officers firing this many rounds into a car that has a five-year-old in the car. There is no explanation. ... How is it keeping everyone safe to have, as you just heard from the police commissioner, individuals wearing construction vests in masks with long guns. Residents have no idea if these are law enforcement agents or if they are simply attacking someone on the street. ... There is no explanation for this.”

Jumaane Williams says the Marble Hill shooting is "fully in line with ICE's mission of terrorizing immigrant communities"

Jumaane Williams

“Today ICE shot a New Yorker on our streets. He had a child in his car. And even as details remain unknown, this wasn't an outlier or an aberration. This is fully in line with ICE's mission of terrorizing immigrant communities. Fully expected when agents are more armed than they are trained, more directed toward public brutality than public safety.”
