The Post's report rests on six officials who spoke anonymously: five put the total at 22 or more and a sixth at 23, adding that not all of the additional deaths are directly tied to the conflict. The Post says the identities and circumstances of those deaths are unclear. It separately notes that the Pentagon has said two service members died in the region on missions unrelated to the Iran war, Maj. Sorffly Davius (Kuwait, March 6, Operation Spartan Shield) and Sgt. Devin Seibel (Iraq, May 31, Operation Inherent Resolve), and that DCAS does not list them by name. The Post reports that the Pentagon declined to address its questions about the discrepancy, and The Hill (opens in a new tab) reports that the Pentagon's press office did not respond to its request for comment.
