Read the full background

Hasan Piker, a political commentator who streams on Twitch, campaigned with Abdul El-Sayed during Michigan's Democratic Senate primary. El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers in the Nov. 3, 2026, general election, and Rogers and some Democrats have repeatedly called on El-Sayed to disavow Piker.

On a livestream in late October, while watching a news segment about El-Sayed canvassers in West Bloomfield Township, a Detroit suburb with a large Jewish community, Piker said that canvassing there was the equivalent of going to a KKK neighborhood to stump for a Black candidate. Jewish Insider reported that he said the supremacist attitude underlying the worldview of the pro-Israel residents in the segment was identical, calling it Jewish supremacy, and that he berated one resident for voting for Rogers. ADL chief executive Jonathan Greenblatt wrote on Oct. 30 that Piker made the remarks in his livestream the night before.

West Bloomfield is home to Temple Israel, the site of an attack earlier in 2026. In a statement to Jewish Insider, El-Sayed said that comparing Jewish Michiganders to the Ku Klux Klan is utterly inappropriate and flat out wrong, without naming Piker. State Rep. Noah Arbit, who represents the area, Sen. Elissa Slotkin, state Sen. Jeremy Moss and Greenblatt also condemned the remarks.

On a later stream, Piker said his remark was about voters he called Israel firsters rather than Jewish voters, and that he had not attacked the canvassers.
