About this source
Jewish Insider report on Democratic lawmakers' responses to Hasan Piker's remarks and to Abdul El-Sayed's distancing from Piker. It quotes statements from Rep. Brad Schneider, Sen. Jacky Rosen and other members of Congress.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)Before the quotation
Jewish Insider reported that the statement came as more Democratic lawmakers criticized Piker's comments, which it described as saying that Jews' support for Israel invites antisemitic violence. It also reported that some moderate Democrats said Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed's efforts to distance himself from Piker had not gone far enough.
After the quotation
In the same statement, Schneider said El-Sayed had so far refused to condemn Piker's words. He also said that distancing himself from Piker without condemning his rhetoric was disingenuous and that claiming no one speaks for him except himself and his team was not enough.
How this statement is classified
The label describes this statement's response within the context above.
Why this label?
The case asks how people responded to Piker's August 20 remarks about American Jews and Israel, including whether they read them as a warning or as an implicit threat. Schneider called the remarks victim-blaming comments that incite violence against American Jews and said they fit Piker's history of antisemitic statements. That criticizes the remarks directly, so we labeled it Condemned.
