Overview
On November 7, 2026, four days after the midterm elections, President Trump wrote on Truth Social that Democrats were threatening the attorney general and other officials with impeachment and Republican donors with imprisonment. He called it extortion, named Sen. Elissa Slotkin and said he was ordering the Justice Department to look into it. Slotkin said the post threatened to put her in jail. Commentators Laura Loomer and Eric Daugherty welcomed the order, and Aaron Parnas criticized it.
Read the full background
In a Truth Social post at 12:45 p.m. Eastern on November 7, 2026, President Trump wrote that Democrats were threatening "a lot of people, including the Attorney General of the United States," with impeachment and other punishment, and Republican donors with imprisonment. He called it "extortion at the highest level" and "Weaponization and Lawfare at another level," wrote that threatening letters had been sent "from Democrat Political Leaders," and said he was ordering the Justice Department "to look into this criminal act, immediately!" An hour later he asked people to report such threats to the Justice Department or to him and wrote that those responsible should go to jail.
Trump did not say which letters he meant or who sent them. Two days earlier, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, the incoming chair of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, sent letters to companies, agencies and officials, including donors to the White House ballroom, asking for records by January 4, 2027, and warning of "alternative measures to obtain compliance." POLITICO reported that the letters to ballroom donors sought records and warned of possible subpoenas, not imprisonment.
Trump also wrote that Slotkin, a Michigan Democrat, was "saying that she is going to go after all young people that believe in Republican Values." CNBC and POLITICO tied that line to remarks she made at a University of Chicago event on October 13, when she said she wanted young people to see a job in the Trump administration as "buying myself a ton of problems" and wanted "that deterrence message sent." On October 20, Trump said in the Oval Office that she "should be tried." The Justice Department had earlier investigated Slotkin and other Democratic lawmakers over a November 2025 video urging service members to refuse illegal orders, and a federal grand jury declined to indict them.
Slotkin replied on the afternoon of November 7 that Trump had Stephen Miller, his incoming chief of staff, "draft a tweet threatening to put me in jail," and said anyone who breaks the law or uses taxpayer dollars to enrich themselves should be held accountable. The Justice Department did not respond to POLITICO's request for information on its plans, and we did not find a public statement from the department or the White House about the order as of November 8.
