Read the full background

Scott Jennings, a CNN contributor and host of The Scott Jennings Show, played a 41-second compilation of clips of Hasan Piker on his August 11, 2026 broadcast. Piker had campaigned for Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate nominee in Michigan. According to Snopes, Jennings then asked whether Black voters might "find a home in the Republican Party this fall" if Democratic campaigns were "adopting the Piker plan of returning our country to lynchings." That night Jennings posted the segment on X, writing that El-Sayed's "best pal and campaign partner says the USA should resume lynchings against black people." The National Republican Senatorial Committee had posted the same compilation on August 6.

Snopes reported on August 14 that the compilation joined excerpts from Piker streams of July 30, 2024, June 25, 2025 and October 29, 2024, out of context and in some cases out of order. In the October 2024 stream, it says, Piker was mocking a conservative commentator in a debate video and later reading a viewer's chat message aloud when he spoke the words about lynchings.

Piker's complaint (opens in a new tab), filed October 27 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, alleges defamation per se, defamation by implication and false light. It says Jennings captioned the video with a quotation Piker never said, and that Piker's lawyers sent Jennings a written retraction demand on August 31 without receiving a substantive response. Piker seeks $27.5 million in compensatory damages and $45 million in punitive damages. These are Piker's allegations; the court has not ruled on them.

The case was assigned to Judge Amit P. Mehta on October 29, and lawyer Benjamin G. Chew filed a notice of appearance for Jennings the same day. NBC News reported that Jennings did not immediately respond to its request for comment. We could not locate a public response from Jennings to the suit as of November 1, 2026.
