Was Zohran Mamdani right to criticize Israel in his October 7 anniversary statement?

Mamdani mourned Israeli and Palestinian deaths in one October 7 anniversary statement. Walsh, Danon and Alkhatib said the date should focus on victims of Hamas's attack.

Claim in dispute

Mamdani improperly turned the October 7 anniversary into a propaganda attack against Israel.

Overview

Mamdani opened his October 7 anniversary statement by calling Hamas's attack horrific war crimes and mourning Israelis killed or abducted. He then mourned Palestinians, described Israel's Gaza campaign as genocide, criticized occupation and apartheid, and opposed U.S. arms support. Those descriptions are Mamdani's claims. His conclusion argued that honoring the dead requires freedom, safety and dignity for everyone.

Walsh said the anniversary should give Israel a day to mourn the attack without bringing in other grievances. Danon accused Mamdani of using the anniversary for propaganda against Israel. Alkhatib acknowledged Palestinian suffering but called the statement insensitive to October 7 victims and counterproductive for Palestinians.

The disagreement concerns the choice to combine remembrance and criticism. Mamdani did name Hamas and condemn its actions; the argument is not whether his statement omitted Hamas entirely.
