Overview

Polls in Brazil close at 5 p.m. Brasília time. On October 25, Lula's coalition asked the Superior Electoral Court, and then the Supreme Federal Court, to extend voting because of reported public-transport shortages in several states. Flávio Bolsonaro's campaign separately asked the electoral court that afternoon to extend voting in several cities because of rain, flooding and power cuts. Justice Zanin, who was Lula's lawyer before Lula appointed him to the court in 2023, ordered a nationwide two-hour extension just after 5 p.m. and later limited it to polling sections that were still open.

On October 27 the electoral court reported that 34,393 votes were cast after 5 p.m., and that 95% of the sections that closed after 5 p.m. had closed before 5:10 p.m. Lula won 51.79% of valid votes to Flávio Bolsonaro's 48.21%. CNN Brasil reported that within a day Flávio Bolsonaro dropped the annulment plan; he said on October 26 that he would instead seek to strip Lula's ticket of its mandate over alleged abuse of power.

    Before this statement

The statement, issued the day after Flávio Bolsonaro said he would ask for the election to be annulled, notes that he won the first round and says a large increase in public spending on social benefits on the eve of the vote raises questions about a fair electoral process.

"We recognize the presidential result, proclaimed by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), but we understand that the questions raised need to be properly clarified within a balanced and democratic political debate. (Translated from Portuguese. After the statement

The statement says the party will keep following the facts and seeking answers with responsibility, transparency and respect for the institutions.

    Why this label?

"It is impossible, it is impossible to recognize the result of the elections in the context in which these things happened. We are going to use our legal team, we are going to ask for the annulment of these elections. I will not accept that the rules of the game were changed in the middle of the game, once again, by Lula's friends on the Supreme Federal Court. (Translated from Portuguese. Original: é impossível, é impossível reconhecer o resultado das eleições no contexto como essas coisas aconteceram. Nós vamos usar o nosso jurídico, vamos pedir a anulação dessas eleições.
