Overview
Polls in Brazil close at 5 p.m. Brasília time. On October 25, Lula's coalition asked the Superior Electoral Court, and then the Supreme Federal Court, to extend voting because of reported public-transport shortages in several states. Flávio Bolsonaro's campaign separately asked the electoral court that afternoon to extend voting in several cities because of rain, flooding and power cuts. Justice Zanin, who was Lula's lawyer before Lula appointed him to the court in 2023, ordered a nationwide two-hour extension just after 5 p.m. and later limited it to polling sections that were still open.
On October 27 the electoral court reported that 34,393 votes were cast after 5 p.m., and that 95% of the sections that closed after 5 p.m. had closed before 5:10 p.m. Lula won 51.79% of valid votes to Flávio Bolsonaro's 48.21%. CNN Brasil reported that within a day Flávio Bolsonaro dropped the annulment plan; he said on October 26 that he would instead seek to strip Lula's ticket of its mandate over alleged abuse of power.
