Challenged the characterization
Statement summary
Steve Benen argues that the Pentagon's quiet revision of its casualty total effectively concedes the accuracy of reporting Hegseth had attacked. He criticizes the confusion over a count he says should be straightforward.
“Nearly a month later, the department Hegseth leads quietly reversed course, revised its total and effectively conceded that the Post’s article was correct after all.”

Why we used this label
Benen challenges Hegseth's rejection of earlier casualty reporting by arguing that the revised count concedes that reporting was accurate. The quotation contests that characterization rather than expressly condemning an actor.
The Washington Post reported in September at least 22 or 23 U.S. service member deaths in the Iran war, when the Pentagon's public database listed 18. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called the report fake. The Pentagon's count has since risen to 21.
