Jim Davis is president of the University of Texas at Austin. He previously was its chief operating officer and vice president for legal affairs and business strategies. A former U.S. Navy cryptologist, he earned degrees in history at UT Austin and law at Harvard. His legal career included private practice and service as a Texas deputy attorney general.
Davis rejects the distinction French's post drew between the pictured fans and other Texans, without naming French or calling the post racist. That is a challenge to the characterization rather than a condemnation.
Bo French used an image of apparent South Asian UT fans to argue that foreigners were displacing Americans. Critics called the posts racist or xenophobic; French and supporters said they raised a legitimate immigration and admissions dispute.
