Chip Roy on U.S. Politics

Chip Roy

Role at the time: U.S. Representative (R-TX)

Statement summary

Speaking at the Pro-Human Assembly 2026, Rep. Chip Roy became a rare Republican to criticise Trump's approach to AI, saying he disagreed with the president's statement that he should be making the decisions about AI. Roy argued for more "leadership from our elected officials" and, the report says, for vigilant congressional action on managing AI, and said "we the people" should decide how to structure their lives around it. He was also sceptical of Elon Musk's Universal Living Wage proposal, saying that if the country went down that road "it shouldn't be Elon that decides," and questioned whether Dario Amodei and Sam Altman were "totally selfless in spirit" in calling for a slowdown, while conceding the slowdown decision involved "complex questions."

“The president said yesterday that he should be making the decisions about AI. I disagree. … We the people need to decide how to structure our lives. … If we're gonna go down that road, it shouldn't be Elon that decides.”
