Thomas Massie says officials who announced Cole's arrest are obscuring the real bomber

Thomas MassieU.S. Representative for Kentucky's 4th congressional district

Rep. Thomas Massie wrote on X that the officials who took credit for Brian Cole Jr.'s arrest are complicit through negligence or malfeasance, that Cole is not the pipe bomber, and that the identity of the actual perpetrator is being obscured.

Responding to

The FBI knew who planted the January 2021 pipe bombs but concealed that information.

“All of the people who took credit at the podium upon the arrest of Brian Cole Jr. are complicit, either through negligence or malfeasance. Mr. Cole is not the J5/J6 pipe bomber, and the identity of the actual perpetrator is being obscured.”

Where this statement fits

Did the FBI conceal who planted the January 2021 pipe bombs, as Dan Bongino alleged?

Before joining FBI leadership, Dan Bongino alleged that the Bureau already knew who planted the devices outside the DNC and RNC on January 5, 2021, and had concealed an inside operation. Democratic senators challenged him to substantiate or withdraw the accusation. In December 2025 the DOJ charged Brian Cole Jr.; he pleaded not guilty. The charge and its supporting evidence do not establish whether investigators had earlier known Cole's identity or whether the alleged cover-up occurred.

Report on Massie's call for FBI Director Kash Patel to resign after the release of Cole's interrogation transcript.

Before the quotation

In March 2026 Massie wrote that he believed the FBI had arrested the wrong person, citing an analysis by The Blaze. The September 21 post was accompanied by a photo of the officials at the December 2025 news conference announcing Cole's arrest, including then-Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel and Bongino.

After the quotation

On September 30, 2026, after Cole's lawyers released a transcript of his FBI interrogation, Massie wrote that Patel must resign once the case is resolved and that Cole should be released on an ankle monitor until trial.

How this statement is classified

Condemned

The label describes this statement's response within the context above.

Why this label?

Reference point: the accusation that FBI officials knew the bomber's identity and concealed it. Massie asserts that the real perpetrator's identity is being obscured and that the officials who announced the arrest, including FBI leaders, are complicit. That advances the concealment allegation, which this case labels Condemned, as with Bongino's January 2025 remark. We did not use Mixed or conditional because the words "negligence or malfeasance" leave the officials' motive open but not his conclusion that the identity is being hidden. Evidence: primary, Massie's own post on X.

Moss says the pipe-bomb arrest defeated the inside-job theories, assuming the suspect is proven responsible in court

Bradley P. Moss

“this defeated all of the theories, all the conspiracies for the last four years about who this particular pipe bomber could have been. Assuming of course, this person is actually proven in a court of law to have been that person. All the theories that the Trump team, that Dan Bongino, that Kash Patel, everybody was saying was this was an inside job. This was somebody at the bureau. This was someone from the Capitol Police.”
