J Street says criticism of a corporation and of Israel's government is not antisemitism

J StreetAdvocacy organization, in a post on its X account

J Street said in an X post that criticism of a corporation's monopolistic actions and investments, and criticism of Israel's government, is not antisemitism, and that blurring that distinction cheapens the fight against antisemitism. Jewish Insider reported the post as a defense of Ruffalo.

“What is antisemitism? Blaming Jewish people for the actions of the Israeli government. Hatred or discrimination directed at people because they are Jewish What isn’t? Criticism of a corporation’s monopolistic actions and investments. Criticism of Israel’s government. We cheapen the fight against antisemitism when we blur that distinction.”

Where this statement fits

Did Mark Ruffalo’s Paramount–Warner criticism invoke antisemitic tropes?

Mark Ruffalo connected Oracle’s assistance to the Israeli military and Larry Ellison’s financing of Paramount’s proposed Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition to concerns about Gaza, surveillance, media concentration, and oligarchic power. Paramount and several Jewish organizations said his framing echoed conspiracies about Jewish wealth and media control. Ruffalo and his defenders argued that he criticized identified executives, military contracts, and a documented corporate transaction—not Jews as a group.

How this statement is classified

Challenged the characterization

The label describes this statement's response within the context above.

Why this label?

The reference point is Ruffalo's Paramount-Warner criticism and the charge that it invoked antisemitic tropes. J Street said criticism of a corporation's monopolistic actions and investments, and criticism of Israel's government, is not antisemitism, and that blurring that distinction cheapens the fight against antisemitism. That disputes the label without endorsing what Ruffalo said, so we labeled it Challenged the characterization.
