Mike Rogers says the president should keep authority to continue the Iran war during negotiations

Mike RogersRepublican candidate for U.S. Senate in Michigan, in a CBS Detroit TV interview

In a CBS Detroit TV interview, Mike Rogers, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Michigan, was asked whether the president should have authorization from Congress to continue the war with Iran. Rogers said he did not mind giving the president authority to continue, because stopping in the middle of negotiations would not be good for America, and added that the president should wrap it up.

“I mean, I don't mind giving the president authority to continue. You can't stop in mid-negotiation. I think that would not be good for America. But I want him to wrap it up. And my understanding is he's doing just that. He's negotiating to get this thing done. That's the right course of action. We want it done.”

Before the quotation

Earlier in the interview, Rogers said the United States had to keep Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and from controlling the Strait of Hormuz, and that once those goals were met the war should be done as soon as possible. CBS Detroit then asked whether, if the war was not over as soon as everyone would like, the president should have authorization from Congress to continue it.

After the quotation

On September 21, 2026, the Rogers campaign released an ad saying the war "needs to end and end quickly."

How this statement is classified

Defended or excused

The label describes this statement's response within the context above.

Why this label?

The case tracks support for continued U.S. military operations against Iran. Asked whether the president should have authority from Congress to continue the war, Rogers said he did not mind giving it and that stopping mid-negotiation would be bad for America, so we labeled it Defended. Rogers also said he wanted the war wrapped up, so this is support for continuing through negotiations, not for an open-ended war.

Christopher Lancia says he would not fund an expanded Iran conflict without clear intelligence and a defined mission

Christopher Lancia

“As a member of Congress, I would not support additional funding for an expanded military conflict without clear intelligence, documented evidence of the threat, a defined mission, and a full understanding of what we’re asking our military to do. I would want to review that intelligence myself before making a decision that could put American lives at risk. I will always support doing whatever is necessary to defend the United States and protect the American people. But I will never support sending our sons and daughters into another unnecessary war simply because Washington decides that’s what we should do.”

Tyler Macallister supports stopping Iranian attacks on Americans but opposes boots on the ground for now

Tyler Macallister

“I support an effort to stop attacks on Americans by Iran and its’ proxies, restore peace in the Middle East and the restoration of prosperity to Iranian people. How we get there is the something that must be addressed. I am not in favor of boots on the ground at this time, but to make a final judgement without understanding capabilities, ally support and course of action would be premature.”
