Cruz says "I think it is a military conflict" when asked on CNN whether the fighting with Iran is a war

Ted CruzU.S. senator from Texas, interviewed on CNN's The Source with Kaitlan Collins

Asked by CNN host Kaitlan Collins whether he believes the fighting with Iran is a war, Cruz said, "I think it is a military conflict." He said there is "relatively little active military engagement right now" and that "it's been several months since we've had sustained military conflict." When Collins noted that the United States had bombed five Iranian oil tankers that day, he said there are "ongoing hostilities" but that "it is not as sustained."

Responding to

Vice President JD Vance said he would not call the U.S. fight with Iran a war, saying there is no active shooting right now and that major combat operations lasted about six weeks.

“I think it is a military conflict. There's relatively little active military engagement right now. There are occasional skirmishes. There's some shots back and forth. But it's been several months since we've had sustained military conflict. ... Are there some ongoing hostilities? Yes, but it is not as sustained. And it is not a military conflict that has major engagement most days.”

Where this statement fits

Is the U.S. fight with Iran a war, as Vice President Vance says it is not?

At a White House press briefing on September 3, 2026, Vice President JD Vance was asked whether the fighting with Iran would be over before the midterm elections. He said, "I wouldn't call it a war. Right now, there is no active shooting," and said major combat operations lasted about six weeks. The next day President Trump said he calls it "a military conflict because it's small potatoes for us." Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Rep. Ro Khanna, Rep. Thomas Massie and Democrat Amy McGrath, a former Marine pilot, criticized the description or Trump's defense of it. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the U.S. is "still in a conflict, for sure," and, as quoted by Al Arabiya English, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson called the fighting "an overt military aggression." The dispute is whether describing the fighting as not a war is an accurate and acceptable characterization.

About this source

CNN's video of part of the September 8, 2026 interview on The Source with Kaitlan Collins, posted to CNN's YouTube channel. The exchange in which Collins asks whether Cruz believes it is a war begins at about 4:03.

Before the quotation

Cruz was interviewed on September 8, 2026, the week after Vance's briefing. Collins had noted that gas prices are higher and asked how much longer that goes on before she asked, "Do you believe that this is a war?"

After the quotation

Collins then played Vance's September 3 answer and asked, "Does the war go on as long as Iran is capable of firing at these commercial ships?" Cruz replied, "JD is basically right in what he said there," and went on to describe Iran's government as a terrorist regime that is not accepting peace.

How this statement is classified

Defended or excused

The label describes this statement's response within the context above.

Why this label?

The reference point is Vance's statement that he would not call the fighting a war. Asked directly whether it is a war, Cruz answers "I think it is a military conflict" and describes little active engagement, which supports the not-a-war description. He acknowledges "ongoing hostilities" but calls them "not as sustained", so defends or excuses fits better than mixed or conditional.
