Media Matters says Vance gave “a wink and a nod” to Tucker Carlson’s “dirtier” claim
Media Matters for AmericaProgressive media-watchdog organization, in an analysis by senior fellow Matt Gertz
In an analysis published September 11, Media Matters wrote that Vance’s sentence about being “called racist” echoed Tucker Carlson’s claim that immigration makes the country “poorer” and “dirtier”, which it said “was widely recognized as bigoted”. It wrote that Vance, who had declined a week earlier to distance himself from Carlson, “gave a wink and a nod to Carlson and his audience”.
“Who was “called racist” for suggesting “our country was becoming dirtier and poorer”? That would be Carlson, who declared that immigrants were the cause. … Carlson’s statement that immigrants make the United States “poorer” is incorrect, and his claim that they make it “dirtier” was widely recognized as bigoted. … And last night, Vance gave a wink and a nod to Carlson and his audience on the biggest stage available to him.”

About this source
Media Matters analysis published the day after Vance’s speech. It compares Vance’s sentence about being “called racist for noticing that our country was becoming dirtier and poorer and less safe and less prosperous” with a December 2018 monologue by Tucker Carlson, and with Vance’s 2021 remarks on Carlson’s program. It also cites Vance’s September 3 White House press briefing remarks about Carlson.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)Before the quotation
The article says Vance’s sentence came a week after he used a September 3 White House press briefing to portray Carlson as merely a “friend” with whom he sometimes has “political disagreements.”
After the quotation
The article also cites Vance’s July 2021 appearance on Carlson’s program, where Vance said his children would grow up in a country that was much poorer and much dirtier if nothing changed.
How this statement is classified
The label describes this statement's response within the context above.
Why this label?
Relative to Vance’s sentence about being called racist for noticing the country becoming dirtier, Media Matters ties it to a Carlson claim it says “was widely recognized as bigoted” and says Vance “gave a wink and a nod to Carlson and his audience”. That criticizes the statement itself, not only how it was described, so condemns fits better than “Challenged the characterization”.
