Robert Spencer says Yousef's remarks are not "based on bigotry or ignorance"

Robert SpencerDirector of Jihad Watch, writing a signed opinion column for PJ Media

Robert Spencer argued in a PJ Media column that Yousef's remarks were not based on bigotry or ignorance but on firsthand experience, and characterised the condemnations of them as virtue signalling.

“Many will find his words about wanting Muslims out of America to be too strong, but no one can honestly say they're based on bigotry or ignorance, or even on dislike of Muslims as human beings. He is speaking this way because he has firsthand experience regarding the brutality, inhumanity, and oppression of Islamic law.”

Where this statement fits

Mosab Hassan Yousef’s call for Muslims to leave the United States at the Jewish American Summit

At the August 30, 2026 Jewish American Summit in Los Angeles, Mosab Hassan Yousef said he did not want Muslims in America, used profanity to tell Muslims to leave the United States, and told them to return to and reform the countries they came from. Audience members applauded. Critics characterized the remarks and the response as anti-Muslim bigotry; the dispute also concerns responsibility among the event's organizers, sponsors, speakers, and public commentators.

About this source

Signed column defending Yousef's remarks against the condemnations recorded on this case. It names CAIR, Karen Bass, Lindsey Horvath, the Nexus Project and Mehdi Hasan by their responses, and argues Yousef is criticising an ideology rather than expressing racism. Spencer directs Jihad Watch; the piece is opinion, not reporting.

Before the quotation

Written six days after the August 30 summit, in response to the wave of condemnations. The column names CAIR, Mayor Karen Bass, Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, the Nexus Project and Mehdi Hasan by their responses, all of which are recorded separately on this case.

After the quotation

Spencer argues elsewhere in the column that Yousef's critics know he is "criticizing a supremacist, expansionist, violent ideology, not speaking out of 'racism' or some irrational hatred." He does not address the audience's applause, which is part of what this case's critics objected to. The column is opinion by an author who writes extensively on Islam; it is not reporting.

How this statement is classified

Defended or excused

The label describes this statement's response within the context above.

Why this label?

On Yousef's remarks and whether they constitute anti-Muslim bigotry, Spencer defends them. He concedes only that others will find the words "too strong," which reports their reaction rather than adopting it, and then justifies the remarks by reference to Yousef's experience of Islamic law. “Challenged the characterization” is the closest competing label, because he does dispute the words "bigotry" and "racism," but it loses because the passage does not stop at rejecting a label: it goes on to supply an affirmative justification for the remarks themselves. This is one of only three non-condemning positions recorded on the case, and the most substantive.
