As of the morning of September 25, we could not locate a statement on the report from Caldwell himself. His attorney, Thomas Calcagni, said in a written statement (opens in a new tab) that the process was "one-sided," that Caldwell "categorically denies" the comment, and that the evidence does not establish that he used his office to obtain a government benefit for the employee he recommended. In a May 28 letter (opens in a new tab) to the Chief Ethics Officer, published as an exhibit to the report, Caldwell called the complaint's accusations false. The lawyer's statement did not address whether he would resign; a professor who knows Caldwell, quoted by The Philadelphia Inquirer (opens in a new tab) on September 22 said Caldwell had told him he would not.
Republican officials, including Senate Republican Leader Anthony Bucco (opens in a new tab) and the state party chair (opens in a new tab), have called for his resignation.
