Overview
Laura Loomer called Zohran Mamdani a jihadist communist while sharing footage of his November 21, 2025 visit to the Oval Office. In the press conference, Trump rejected the jihadist description when a reporter asked about Elise Stefanik's use of it. That exchange concerned Stefanik. Loomer made the disagreement explicit in June 2026, recalling Trump's answer and insisting that Mamdani was a jihadi. Loomer's November post (opens in a new tab), Trump's answer (opens in a new tab), Loomer's June response (opens in a new tab)
Alex Thurston, a scholar of Islam and politics, directly criticized Loomer's usage in a November 24, 2025 essay. After quoting her earlier campaign-period remarks, he argued that she used jihadist as a synonym for outsider and condemned the rhetoric as racist and anti-Muslim. His criticism concerned those earlier remarks, not her October 2026 posts. Thurston's essay (opens in a new tab)
On October 7, 2026, Loomer again applied the label to Mamdani after his anniversary statement and accused him of normalizing the killing of non-Muslims. The mayor's statement had condemned Hamas's attack as war crimes and mourned Israelis killed or abducted, before condemning Israel's conduct in Gaza and U.S. arms support. Loomer's accusation and the statement she cited are separate pieces of evidence. Loomer's post (opens in a new tab), Mamdani's statement (opens in a new tab)
The next morning, Loomer described Mamdani as a supporter of Islamic terror and asked reporters to question Kash Patel about his security clearance. Her posts establish what she alleged. They do not include evidence that Mamdani belongs to a terrorist organization or participates in terrorist violence. The dispute over whether the FBI denied him a clearance is tracked separately. October 8 post (opens in a new tab), [clearance case](/cases/mamdani-fbi-security-clearance-laura-loomer-claim)
This case concerns Loomer's characterization and the arguments offered for and against it. The separate question of whether Mamdani was right to criticize Israel in an anniversary remembrance is covered in the [October 7 statement case](/cases/mamdani-october-7-anniversary-statement-israel-gaza).
