Overview
Heidi Levine, a veteran photographer working for The Washington Post, was covering Palestinian families' olive harvest near Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah, on the morning of October 16, 2026. The Post reported that dozens of masked men came down from a hilltop settlement, set groves on fire and threw stones with slings. Levine, who wore a vest marked as press, said she was knocked to the ground and kicked repeatedly, and that her cameras and phone were taken. The Post reported that she was treated for lacerations and a broken rib, will need surgery on one hand, and that video of the incident corroborated witness accounts.
The Israeli military said its forces dispersed a violent confrontation, condemned the incident and said police would collect evidence. A military spokesperson told the Post that troops in the area did not see the assault on Levine. Netanyahu's office said the facts remain unclear, cited reports that some 200 Arabs and far-left activists confronted about 40 Israeli youths, and said the investigation must establish who initiated the violence. Post executive editor Matt Murray replied that Levine was clearly marked as press and clearly beaten.
The Binyamin Regional Council, which represents settlements in the area, blamed the Palestinian Authority for organizing the confrontation, according to the Post. Journalists at the scene told the Post the clash began when men from the settlement attacked Palestinians.
