Financial Times reports Hegseth's broker sought a defense-fund investment before the Iran war; Hegseth calls the story false

The FT says Hegseth's broker asked BlackRock about a defense-industry fund weeks before the Iran war. The Pentagon and Hegseth call the report false. Democratic senators say it would be a serious conflict of interest if accurate.

Overview

According to the Financial Times, which cited three unnamed sources, the inquiry concerned BlackRock's iShares Defense Industrials Active ETF and did not go ahead because the fund was not yet available to Morgan Stanley clients. Al Jazeera reported that it could not independently confirm the report, that BlackRock declined to comment and that the fund had fallen nearly 13 percent in the month after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28.

Presidentially appointed Defense Department officials may not own or buy stock in companies that have ranked among the department's 10 largest contractors in recent years. In his January 2025 ethics agreement, Hegseth said any investment professional he uses would get his approval before buying assets other than cash, diversified funds and certain bonds. The senators' letter says the fund holds stock in seven companies Hegseth was barred from owning in 2026.

The senators asked for answers by April 15, 2026. At the April 30 Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Warren said Hegseth had not responded to the letter.

Disputed claim

Elizabeth Warren

If the Financial Times report is accurate, the attempted investment would be a profound conflict of interest and a potential violation of Hegseth's federal ethics agreement.

What is disputed

The senators note that Hegseth's ethics agreement requires his approval before an investment professional buys assets other than cash, diversified funds and certain bonds. Hegseth told the Senate Armed Services Committee on April 30 that he is not making investments and that his broker knows he needs his sign-off.

  1. Pete HegsethU.S. secretary of defenseDirectly involved

    Before this statement

Warren said the Financial Times had reported that Hegseth's broker tried to buy shares in a BlackRock fund invested in defense companies just before the war began. Hegseth interrupted as she began to describe the law on defense officials' stock holdings.

"That entire story is false. It has been from the beginning and was made up out of whole cloth."
    Denied

Responding to: Hegseth's broker at Morgan Stanley contacted BlackRock in February 2026 about a multimillion-dollar investment in its Defense Industrials Active ETF, weeks before the United States and Israel attacked Iran.

    Full statement and sources

At a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Hegseth says the Financial Times story is false and was made up, and says he does not serve for money or stocks.

    After the statement

When Warren asked whether he had sought, through his broker or otherwise, to invest in defense-related funds before the war, Hegseth answered no. He said he is not making investments and that his broker knows he must get his sign-off.

    Why this label?

The reference point is the Financial Times report that Hegseth's broker sought a multimillion-dollar investment in a defense-industry fund before the Iran war. Hegseth calls the story "false" and says it was "made up out of whole cloth", so we labeled it Denied. The closest competing label is Challenged the characterization, because he also objects to how the report was worded; it loses because he denies the underlying account.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

  2. Elizabeth WarrenU.S. senator from MassachusettsDirectly involved

    Before this statement

The letter, signed by Warren and Sens. Richard Blumenthal, Tammy Duckworth, Jeff Merkley and Gary Peters, opens by quoting the Financial Times report.

"If this report is accurate, it would appear to represent an appalling effort to profit off of your knowledge of the President's plans for war."
    Mixed or conditional

Responding to: If the Financial Times report is accurate, the attempted investment would be a profound conflict of interest and a potential violation of Hegseth's federal ethics agreement.

    Full statement and sources

Warren and four other Democratic senators write that, if accurate, the reported investment would be an effort to profit from knowledge of war plans and a potential violation of Hegseth's ethics agreement, and ask him to answer questions by April 15.

    After the statement

The senators wrote that the reported conduct would be a profound conflict of interest and a potential violation of Hegseth's federal ethics agreement. They noted that the Pentagon's spokesperson had denied the story and asked Hegseth whether he had shared information about pending military action with his broker.

    Why this label?

The reference point is the Financial Times report that Hegseth's broker sought a multimillion-dollar investment in a defense-industry fund before the Iran war. The senators criticize the conduct "If this report is accurate" and note the Pentagon's denial, so we labeled it Mixed or conditional. The closest competing label is Condemned; it loses because their criticism depends on the report being accurate.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.

  3. Sean ParnellPentagon chief spokesmanDirectly involved

    Before this statement

Parnell posted the response on the evening of March 30, quoting the Financial Times post that promoted its report.

"This allegation is entirely false and fabricated. Neither Secretary Hegseth nor any of his representatives approached BlackRock about any such investment. This is yet another baseless, dishonest smear designed to mislead the public."
    Denied

    Why this label?

The reference point is the Financial Times report that Hegseth's broker sought a multimillion-dollar investment in a defense-industry fund before the Iran war. Parnell says the allegation is "entirely false and fabricated", so we labeled it Denied. The closest competing label is Challenged the characterization; it loses because he disputes that the approach happened at all.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.
