Did the FBI conceal who planted the January 2021 pipe bombs, as Dan Bongino alleged?

Bongino alleged FBI knowledge and an inside-job cover-up in the January 2021 pipe-bomb investigation. Senators challenged the claim; DOJ later charged Brian Cole Jr., who pleaded not guilty.

Overview

This case classifies responses to Bongino's accusation that FBI officials knew the bomber's identity and concealed an inside operation. A March 28, 2025 Senate Judiciary letter (opens in a new tab), page 2, quotes his November 14, 2024 and January 12, 2025 podcast remarks and challenges him to provide evidence now that he is deputy director. The letter links the original Rumble episodes, but we could not play those videos. The quotation is therefore checked against the senators' original letter, not against the podcast recordings.

The DOJ's January 6, 2026 announcement (opens in a new tab) describes charges against Brian Cole Jr. and evidence from his phone, vehicle and purchases. AP reported in July (opens in a new tab) that he pleaded not guilty and a 2027 trial was scheduled. This is a charge, not a finding of guilt. A later arrest also does not answer whether the FBI knew the identity earlier.

  1. Dan BonginoDeputy Director of the FBIDirectly involved

    Before this statement

Bongino appeared on Hannity on the night the FBI announced the arrest of Brian Cole Jr. Hannity read back Bongino's earlier post that the bomber's identity was being hidden because the bomber was either a connected anti-Trump insider or the act was an inside job. Bongino replied that the investigation had just begun and that investigators were comfortable they had their suspect.

"I was paid in the past, Sean, for my opinions. That's clear and one day I'll be back in that space, but that's not what I'm paid for now. I'm paid to be your Deputy Director and we base investigations on facts"
    Explicitly stayed out

Responding to: The FBI knew who planted the January 2021 pipe bombs but concealed that information.

    Full statement and sources

Asked by Sean Hannity about his earlier post alleging a massive cover-up of the pipe bomber's identity, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said the investigation had just begun and that investigators were comfortable they had their suspect. He said he had been paid for his opinions in the past and was now paid to base investigations on facts.

    After the statement

Bongino went on to say he had seen media figures at the news conference who had promoted the Trump-Russia collusion allegations, and that the difference was that his side evolves as new information comes out. He left the FBI in January 2026.

'CHAPTER 1': Bongino WARNS the DC pipe bomb investigation has only JUST begun · Fox NewsFox News YouTube upload of the Dec. 4, 2025 Hannity interview, about 4:38 to 5:37

    Why this label?

Reference point: Bongino's accusation that FBI officials knew the bomber's identity and concealed it. Asked directly about that accusation, Bongino redirects to his change of role rather than affirming or retracting it, so we used Explicitly stayed out. Challenged the characterization is close, but he does not dispute the cover-up label; his remark that his side evolves as new information comes out suggests a different view without stating one. The Condemned label on his January 2025 remark no longer fits because he does not repeat the allegation. Evidence: primary, the Fox News video of the interview, checked against its captions and an audio transcription.

This label describes the statement's response within the context above.
