Role at the time: U.S. representative for Kentucky's 4th Congressional District, in a phone interview with Roll Call
Statement summary
Massie says he will bring his impeachment resolution soon after the House returns for the lame-duck session, as long as Hegseth is still in the job.
“I’m not sure if I would do it the night we get back, but it would be soon after we return — if he’s still in the job”
Roll Call's account of a phone interview with Massie about the timing and prospects of his impeachment resolution. It also quotes Rep. Jason Crow's Face the Nation remarks.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)On whether Hegseth should be impeached, Massie restates his plan to force a vote on his own articles of impeachment if Hegseth remains in office. That supports impeachment.
Role at the time: U.S. representative for Kentucky's 4th Congressional District
Statement summary
Rep. Thomas Massie wrote on X that President Trump "should fire Hegseth to avoid Hegseth's impeachment" and called it "the honorable thing to do". He said the House recessed early to avoid the vote and that he will reintroduce articles of impeachment against Hegseth when the House returns for the lame-duck session, whatever the result of the midterm election.
“Trump should fire Hegseth to avoid Hegseth’s impeachment. It’s the honorable thing to do. The House recessed early to avoid the vote, so I will reintroduce Hegseth articles of impeachment when we return for the lame duck session, regardless of the outcome of the midterm election.”
Rep. Thomas Massie posted this on X on October 15, 2026, quoting a post from The Hormuz Letter account that said Trump was considering firing Hegseth after the midterm elections. We could not confirm the report Massie was responding to.
Massie calls for Hegseth's removal, either by Trump firing him or by impeachment, and commits to reintroducing articles of impeachment. That supports impeaching Hegseth if he stays in office.

Role at the time: U.S. representative from Kentucky (R), speaking to the Washington Examiner
Response to this claim
Vice President JD Vance said he would not call the U.S. fight with Iran a war, saying there is no active shooting right now and that major combat operations lasted about six weeks.
“But the vice president and other sophisticated advisers recognize that to acknowledge it’s a war is to acknowledge they’re in violation of the 1973 War Powers Act, which allows them only 90 days to engage before they must withdraw or get congressional approval ... I think playing these semantics is an insult to the men and women fighting the war and to those who’ve already sacrificed ... Why not attempt to get the constitutionally and legally mandated congressional approval so they can call a war a war?”
The Washington Examiner's report on comments Massie made to the outlet on Thursday, September 3, 2026, the day of Vance's briefing. The article quotes Massie directly.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)Massie rejects the not-a-war description as semantics that insult service members and says it is meant to avoid the War Powers Act. He goes beyond disputing the label to denouncing it, so condemns fits better than challenges the characterization.
