Role at the time: Speaker of the House
Statement summary
Speaker Mike Johnson called Thomas Massie's impeachment push against Hegseth "ridiculous" and "a publicity stunt," saying Hegseth "has done an extraordinary job."
“ridiculous... a publicity stunt by someone who wants attention... Secretary Hegseth has done an extraordinary job at the Department of War... we should not be playing games with national security.”
Washington Examiner report on Speaker Mike Johnson dismissing Thomas Massie's impeachment push against Hegseth as a publicity stunt.
Johnson explicitly defends Hegseth's record as 'extraordinary' and dismisses the impeachment effort as a publicity stunt, a direct defense of Hegseth against the impeachment push.
Role at the time: Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives
Response to this claim
Vice President JD Vance said he would not call the U.S. fight with Iran a war, saying there is no active shooting right now and that major combat operations lasted about six weeks.
“I don’t think we have an active, kinetic military bombing, firing or anything like that. Right now, we are trying to broker a peace … We are not at war.”
The Hill's report on Speaker Mike Johnson's comments on Thursday, April 30, 2026, as the 60-day mark under the War Powers Resolution approached. It also reports that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told a Senate committee that the ceasefire paused the 60-day clock.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)Measured against Vance's description of the fight as not a war, Johnson used the same description more than four months earlier and tied it to the absence of active bombing or firing. That defends the not-a-war description. The closest competing label, “Challenged the characterization”, loses because he states the description as his own view rather than disputing someone else's.

Role at the time: Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, in an interview with CBS News
Statement summary
In a CBS News interview, House Speaker Mike Johnson said some colleagues had concerns that a video of the execution could become a recruiting tool for terrorists, and said he would tell the White House that not everyone favored the idea.
“There are colleagues who have concerns ... The concern would be that you would create a video that would be a recruiting tool for future terrorists ... I need to tell the White House what some of my colleagues think about that, and not everybody is in favor of the idea.”
Scripps News report, carried by WXYZ Detroit, on House Speaker Mike Johnson's remarks in a CBS News interview broadcast on October 12, 2026 about the plan to livestream Nidal Hasan's execution.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)The case asks whether Pete Hegseth should livestream Nidal Hasan's execution. Johnson relays his colleagues' concern that a broadcast could help terrorist recruiting and says he would not watch, but he frames the question as one still open for discussion with the White House. That is a reservation rather than a rejection, so we labeled it Mixed or conditional. The closest competing label is Condemned; it loses because he does not say the plan should be dropped.
