He expressly grants the substance, saying he understands the point and the argument being made, and simultaneously criticises the framing as obtuse about its consequences. He also turns the criticism on himself, asking whether he is “too poisoned by campaigns and politics,” which qualifies rather than withdraws the objection. “Condemned” loses because he accepts the underlying argument; “Defended or excused” loses because he plainly objects to how it was put.
