Response to this claim
FBI Director Kash Patel is scheduled to visit Russia on October 14 and 15, 2026, first stopping in Moscow and then St. Petersburg, with the FSB likely to host him.
“In the interest of national security, we ask you to reconsider. Call off this trip.”
Five-page letter dated October 5, 2026, from the ranking Democrats on the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees. It asks Patel to cancel a reported two-day trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg that Russia's Federal Security Service would host, and, if he goes ahead, to give a closed-door briefing by October 12 on the trip and on FBI cooperation with Russian and Chinese law enforcement.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)The case centers on Patel's reported trip to Russia hosted by the FSB. Raskin asks Patel to cancel it on national security grounds, so we used condemns.

Statement summary
Jamie Raskin and Pramila Jayapal wrote to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin and acting ICE Director David Venturella on July 30, 2026 that DHS made false and unsubstantiated allegations about people its agents shot, including Ruben Ray Martinez, and that later evidence contradicted DHS's claims that they were attacking officers. They asked DHS to equip every agent with a functioning body-worn camera and to hold agents accountable who do not turn them on.
“DHS and its component agencies have consistently made false and unsubstantiated allegations about people its agents shot, including Renée Good, Alex Pretti, Ruben Ray Martinez, and Marimar Martinez. DHS initially claimed these U.S. citizens, all of whom they either killed or maimed, were attacking law enforcement officers. In each case, evidence later emerged that definitively contradicted the government's claims, showing that DHS made false or misleading statements.”
The lawmakers' body-camera demand and criticism of DHS shooting accounts.
The case asks whether Stevens was justified in shooting Martinez. The letter says DHS claimed Martinez and other U.S. citizens its agents killed or maimed were attacking officers, and that evidence later definitively contradicted those claims. That rejects the justification offered for the shooting, so we labeled it Condemned. Challenged the characterization is the closest competing label; it loses because the letter goes beyond disputing a description and treats the killing as resting on claims it calls false.

Statement summary
In his opening statement at the House Judiciary Committee's January 22, 2026 hearing with Smith, Rep. Jamie Raskin said Republicans had complained about the special counsel's review of toll records, which he described as phone records showing only the timing and duration of calls and no content. He said the records were lawfully subpoenaed because Donald Trump made those members of Congress relevant to the investigation by choosing to call them to advance what Raskin called a criminal scheme.
“My colleagues have complained about the Special Counsel’s review of toll records, which are phone records like a phone bill showing only the timing and duration of calls and containing no content, no substance whatsoever from the calls. But those records were lawfully subpoenaed because Donald Trump made those Members of Congress relevant to the investigation. It was Trump who chose to call them to advance his criminal scheme.”
House Judiciary Committee Democrats' text of Ranking Member Jamie Raskin's opening remarks at the committee's January 22, 2026 hearing with Jack Smith. In one paragraph Raskin addresses Republican complaints about the toll records of members of Congress.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)The case asks whether the collection of members' phone records and messages was proper. Raskin said the toll records were lawfully subpoenaed because Trump made those members relevant to the investigation. That defends the collection as proper, so we labeled it Defended or excused.

Role at the time: Maryland state senator for District 20.
Statement summary
As a Maryland state senator, Raskin supported limits on a license plate surveillance network that combined fixed and mobile cameras. He backed crime-solving uses while seeking a 90-day limit on keeping records unrelated to ongoing investigations.
“is used to solve crimes, but not to extend the reach of big brother”
The report describes local, state and federal sharing of license plate records, sometimes with indefinite retention. The proposal would delete records unrelated to ongoing investigations after no more than 90 days.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)Raskin supports crime-solving uses while rejecting broader tracking and supporting a retention limit. This is a historical statement about Maryland's network, which included fixed cameras.
