Statement summary
Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) led a letter signed by 11 other Democratic and independent senators to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The letter says Americans "should never have to wonder whether the federal government intends to police the ballot box with armed agents" and that this "is precisely what the Trump administration appears to be considering, if not planning".
“Americans should never have to wonder whether the federal government intends to police the ballot box with armed agents. Yet that is precisely what the Trump administration appears to be considering, if not planning. … The Administration now has a choice. It can continue to fuel the appearance that it is laying the groundwork for an unprecedented federal intrusion into state-run elections, or it can finally provide Congress and the American people with the transparency they deserve.”
Letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Secretary Pete Hegseth signed by twelve senators. It says senior officials have repeatedly refused to rule out deploying federal law enforcement officers at polling places, cites Blanche's confirmation hearing and Mullin's March testimony, and asks for written answers by August 11, 2026.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)The reference point is the administration's stated or threatened use of ICE and other armed federal agents at or near polling places in the 2026 election. The letter says senior officials have repeatedly refused to rule out deploying federal law enforcement at polling places, that federal law bars it, and that the administration appears to be considering or planning it. That criticizes the stated or threatened use directly, so condemns fits better than mixed or conditional.
