“Dario's essay points towards the right path forward. The details need working through, but the direction is correct for meeting this critical moment. This is also why we recently put out our proposal for an industry-wide standards body for frontier AI.”

Why we used this label
Hassabis endorses the direction of Amodei's essay and points to Google DeepMind's proposal for an industry-wide standards body. He names no government requirement, and the mechanism he actually proposes is industry-authored. The closest competing label is “Defended or excused”, the previous label; it loses because endorsing an industry standards body is not an endorsement of a federal one. Industry self-governance is the principal alternative to federal action in this case — Huang (727), Johnson (729) and Zuckerberg (939) each invoke it to reject the proposition — so counting it as support would collapse the axis the dispute turns on. condemns also loses: the speaker does not reject federal action, but does not address it. This aligns the record with Musk (617, 736) and Benioff (733), who propose industry mechanisms and are classified “Mixed or conditional”.
