Role at the time: U.S. senator from New York and Senate Democratic leader
Statement summary
Schumer urged the FCC to deny the political-call exemption, arguing that call limits and opt-outs would not undo a deceptive first call.
“The approaching election is a reason to preserve safeguards, not suspend them. The Commission should deny the requested relief and retain prior express consent.”
The letter discusses cloned voices, false endorsements and voting instructions, and the petition's proposed limits. Schumer says his objection applies to every party and advocacy group and calls for fuller review of any broader changes.
Relative to the proposed exemption, Schumer expressly opposes removing prior consent and asks the FCC to deny the request.
Role at the time: Senate Democratic leader, in a letter to Flock Safety's chief executive and a press release announcing it
Statement summary
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer wrote to Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley that personal data not tied to a crime should be deleted from Flock's servers, and pressed the company on its National Lookup Tool, reports of hacked cameras and misuse of plate readers, and whether any federal agency has accessed its data.
“At a minimum, personal data not tied to a crime should be deleted from Flock's servers.”
Schumer's letter to Flock Group CEO Garrett Langley, dated October 5, 2026, asking ten written questions on data retention, the National Lookup Tool, federal access, auditing, device security and artificial intelligence, with responses requested by October 16, 2026. His office's press release about the letter is dated October 4.
The case asks whether Flock-style license-plate surveillance networks should exist. Schumer criticizes the network as a tracking system with no rules or consent and calls federal use of it to track Americans exercising their rights "unacceptable," so we labeled it Condemned. His concrete demand is that Flock delete personal data not tied to a crime and disclose who has accessed it, a limit on retention and use rather than a ban, so we placed it at Limit on the remedy ladder.
