Why we used this label

The case asks whether the U.S. should ease sanctions on Russian diesel to lower fuel prices, as the administration did on October 9. Fitzpatrick says he will introduce legislation "to block any and all purchases of Russian oil" and force it to the floor, a direct effort to reverse the easing. We labeled it Condemned. The closest competing label is Challenged characterization; it loses because he proposes to stop the purchases rather than dispute how they are described.

Statement summary

After voting against earlier war powers resolutions, Fitzpatrick voted for H.Con.Res. 86 on June 3, 2026, saying the War Powers Act's 60-day limit legally required bringing the matter to Congress, while also arguing 'the world is a safer place after Iran's nuclear capabilities have been degraded.'

“The law, as it is currently written, requires that the matter now be brought to Congress. That is why I voted in favor of today's resolution. Until my Resolution is passed by Congress, or until the United States Supreme Court rules on the constitutionality of the War Powers Act of 1973, we must abide by the law as it is currently written.”
