In a direct post, Rep. Adam Smith called for a full investigation and characterized ICE as violently targeting people without transparency or accountability. This is Smith’s assessment; the post does not independently establish the broader characterization.

Why we used this label

On whether ICE's use of force should be condemned or condoned, Smith directly condemns it: he says ICE "continues to violently target individuals in this country, without any transparency or accountability" and calls it a "rogue police force" — an express evaluation that the force used was wrongful.

Why we used this label

On whether DHS should lead its own investigation, Smith rejects that arrangement: he says ICE acts "without any transparency or accountability", calls it a "rogue police force", and demands "a full investigation into the shooting of Wilber Rafael Garces Perez and answers" — an explicit call for outside scrutiny rather than a DHS-led inquiry.

The signers criticize the scope of DOJ's June directive and request enforcement counts and safeguards. They accept rigorous denaturalization proceedings against former Nazis who concealed their crimes. Their warnings about political targeting are allegations and concerns, not court findings.

Why we used this label

Signing the letter expresses criticism of the expanded campaign under scrutiny. Acceptance of rigorous revocation proceedings in grave fraud cases does not make the letter's criticism of this directive conditional.
