Ansari rejects the "we're not experts" argument against regulating AI

Yassamin AnsariU.S. Representative for Arizona's 3rd congressional district, posting on her verified X account

Rep. Yassamin Ansari of Arizona rejected the argument that Congress cannot regulate artificial intelligence because members are not experts in it, calling the position outrageous. She said Congress is not expert in pharmaceuticals, nuclear weapons or aviation either, yet has legislated for those industries and created federal agencies staffed with experts to carry out oversight, and said doing the same for AI is Congress's job.

“It's outrageous for Republicans to say we can't regulate AI because we're not experts. We're also not experts on pharmaceutical drugs, nuclear weapons, or aviation, but we've passed laws and regulated these industries, and have created federal agencies with experts to conduct oversight. That's our job, and that's exactly what we must do on AI.”

Should Washington impose stronger safeguards on frontier AI?

Washington's frontier-AI safeguards dispute continued beyond September's calls for legislation. On September 29, Trump and six companies signed an accord covering internal controls, outside evaluations and board oversight, with possible later codification. Trump defended self-regulation and existing federal powers. Critics including Jon Stewart and Tom Wheeler argue that company-led oversight is insufficient. An October 9 task-force statement describes reporting and remediation as mandatory, but does not specify enforcement mechanisms or penalties. The question remains whether Washington's approach supplies adequate, enforceable safeguards while allowing continued AI development.

About this source

First-party post from Rep. Yassamin Ansari's verified X account at 6:37 PM ET on September 17, 2026, with an attached video. It answers the argument, made that week by Sen. Rand Paul in blocking a kill-switch bill and by Sen. Rick Scott in saying Congress will not get smart enough to regulate AI, that legislators lack the expertise to regulate the technology. Both of those positions are recorded separately in this case.

Before the quotation

Sen. Rand Paul had blocked Sen. John Kennedy's attempt to fast-track a bill requiring AI companies to be able to deploy a kill switch, on the grounds that Congress does not understand the technology well enough to regulate it, and Sen. Rick Scott had said Congress would not get smart enough to regulate AI companies. The House had also left for a seven-week recess without acting.

After the quotation

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries separately accused Republicans of cutting and running on AI safety the same day, recorded in this case.
