World Uyghur Congress raises serious concerns about Pillay's award over her record on China

World Uyghur CongressUyghur diaspora umbrella organization, in a press release

In an October 12, 2026 press release, the World Uyghur Congress said it has serious concerns about the committee's decision because of actions taken during Pillay's tenure as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. It acknowledged her contributions elsewhere but said they must not preclude scrutiny of her record on China and on protecting Uyghur human rights defenders.

“The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) expresses serious concerns about this decision in light of actions taken by Pillay during her tenure as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. ... The WUC acknowledges Pillay's contributions in other areas of human rights and international law. However, these achievements must not preclude scrutiny of her record on China, including the protection of Uyghur human rights defenders and her response to the grave human rights violations committed against Uyghurs.”

PRESS RELEASE: WUC raises concerns over the award of Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay (opens in a new tab) · World Uyghur CongressPress release dated October 12, 2026, opening and closing paragraphs

About this source

Press release in which the World Uyghur Congress raises concerns about the award, saying that during Pillay's tenure as High Commissioner her office shared the names of Uyghur and other Chinese human rights defenders with the Chinese government without their consent. Those are the organization's allegations.

Before the quotation

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the prize on October 9. The release says that under Pillay's leadership, the UN human rights office's NGO liaison office shared the names of Uyghur and other Chinese human rights defenders with the Chinese government without their consent. That is the organization's allegation.

After the quotation

The release quotes WUC President Turgunjan Alawdun saying Pillay failed to effectively protect human rights defenders, and former WUC president Dolkun Isa calling the disclosure a profound betrayal of trust.

How this statement is classified

Condemned

The label describes this statement's response within the context above.

Why this label?

The organization says it has serious concerns about the decision to honor Pillay because of her office's record on Uyghur human rights defenders, a direct criticism of the award. The closest competing label is mixed or conditional, because it acknowledges her other contributions. That loses because the acknowledgment does not amount to support for the award.

Trump calls the award to Pillay a disgraceful decision and an indelible stain on Norway

Donald Trump

“the Nobel Prize was given out today to a liberal person who works at the United Nations who nobody has ever heard of. ... The United States of America, represented by me as your President should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, but didn't. And this is an indelible stain on the country of Norway and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision. The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilization.”
