Trump calls Greenland 'our new and beautiful Greenland' and says exploration will begin

Donald TrumpPresident of the United States, in a post on his Truth Social account

Trump says large-scale oil, gas and mineral exploration is about to begin in what he calls 'our new and beautiful Greenland' and describes the island as unmatched for U.S. and European security.

“Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland! There are Experts that are saying that the amount of easily available Oil is far greater than that of almost any land, anywhere in the World and, even more importantly, from a Security Purpose in the Defense and Offense of both the United States of America, and Europe, is second to none.”

Where this statement fits

Trump’s “permanent control” description of the announced U.S.-Denmark-Greenland security agreement

On September 18, 2026, President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that he said gives the United States “permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland.” Danish and Greenlandic officials initially described an expected agreement and emphasized sovereignty and self-determination. On September 22, the White House published an agreement text dated that day. It reaffirms Denmark’s sovereignty and Greenland’s right to self-determination; provides for U.S. defense areas and access under stated procedures; bars non-NATO states from establishing military installations unless the parties agree otherwise; and has no end date. The text says it enters into force only after diplomatic notice of necessary parliamentary procedures. The dispute remains over how Trump’s “permanent control” description compares with the document’s terms.

About this source

Reuters report republished by The Star. It quotes the Danish foreign ministry's statement on resource access under the agreement and reports that Greenland's prime minister's office declined to comment on Trump's post.

Before the quotation

In September, Trump described the agreement with Denmark and Greenland as giving the United States permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland. Greenland banned future oil exploration in 2021.

After the quotation

The post continues that any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where U.S. defenses would knock down drones and missiles. Later that day, Denmark's foreign ministry said U.S. resource exploration must follow Greenlandic law and that the agreement gives U.S. investors no preferential access.

How this statement is classified

Defended or excused

The label describes this statement's response within the context above.

Why this label?

The reference point is Trump's description of the agreement as giving the United States permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland. Here he calls the island 'our new and beautiful Greenland' and presents resource exploration and U.S. defense there as U.S. gains, which restates and extends that description.
