Camille Rivera says it is time the DSCC and national donors started funding Angie Nixon

Camille RiveraDemocratic political strategist, in a column for The Nation

In an October 7, 2026 column in The Nation, Democratic strategist Camille Rivera wrote that Florida is under-invested rather than red and that it is time for the DSCC and national donors to fund Angie Nixon's Senate campaign. She welcomed Nixon's report that party leaders plan to invest and said Nixon's democratic socialist politics are not out of step with voters.

“Angie Nixon is the nominee Democratic voters chose to lead them. It’s time Democratic institutions such as the DSCC and national donors started letting the money flow.”

Where this statement fits

Are national Democrats holding back money from Angie Nixon's Florida Senate campaign because of her ideology and identity?

On September 24, 2026, Angie Nixon, the Democratic nominee for the Florida U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, told MS NOW that national Democratic leaders are reluctant to fund her campaign and gave two explanations: her progressive politics, and her race and gender. A spokesperson for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) told MS NOW the committee monitors all races closely, including Florida. The committee's executive director, Devan Barber, has said additional investments require additional resources. Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings on record as of September 30, 2026 show a joint fundraising committee that includes the DSCC, a $5,000 contribution from a leadership PAC the FEC lists under Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, and DSCC transfers totaling $24,000 to the Democratic Executive Committee of Florida in its July and August reports, but most of the period since the August 18 primary has not yet been reported. This case sets out what each side has said and what the filings show. It does not decide why national Democrats have spent what they have.

About this source

Rivera argues that Democratic institutions should fund Nixon and improve Latino outreach. Her column also acknowledges Nixon's report of prospective leadership investment. It establishes Rivera's argument, not the reason for funding decisions.

Before the quotation

Rivera writes that Florida is not a red state but an under-invested one, that Democrats neglected Latino and Puerto Rican voters in 2020 and 2024, and that donors and Democratic institutions should stop pausing. She acknowledges that Nixon is a democratic socialist and says her policies are not out of step with what voters want.

After the quotation

Rivera argues that turning out Puerto Rican voters could also help other Florida races, including the Ninth Congressional District, and keep the state competitive in 2028.

How this statement is classified

Condemned

The label describes this statement's response within the context above.

Why this label?

The reference point is whether national Democrats are holding back money from Nixon's campaign, and why. Rivera criticizes the holdback: she writes that Florida is under-invested, tells donors and Democratic institutions to stop pausing, and answers the concern about Nixon's democratic socialism by saying her policies fit what voters want. That rejects the decision to hold back, so we labeled it Condemned. She does not say the DSCC is acting on Nixon's ideology or identity, and she calls Nixon's report of planned leadership investment good news; neither defends the holdback.
